Follow the Rise of a Villain in Planet of the Apes: Ursus

BOOM! Studios and Twentieth Century Consumer Products are excited to announce PLANET OF THE APES: URSUS, a comic book series launching in January 2018 about the classic franchise’s most notorious villain. Written by David F. Walker (Power Man & Iron Fist, War for the Planet of the Apes) and illustrated by Christopher Mooneyham (Five Ghosts)—both longtime fans of the franchise—the series will follow the rise through the ranks of the ape who has hated (and feared) mankind the most, including what first brought him to the Forbidden Zone. This is the first project from BOOM! Studios in 2018 as part of their yearlong celebration of the franchise's 50th anniversary.

“I’m a lifelong Planet of the Apes fan, and when I was a kid, General Ursus terrified me,” says Walker of the character who first debuted in 1970’s Beneath the Planet of the Apes. “He came right out and said, ‘The only good human is a dead human,’ and that gave me nightmares. At the same time, I always wanted to know more about him, and as a writer, few things are more interesting than exploring what makes a villain tick.”

“Ursus, to me, is just an old soldier, with no more wars to fight,” adds Mooneyham. “He's lost a lot, and given even more. He's a super-prejudiced gorilla who's just looking for a reason to keep on going. Personally, I think David has nailed Ursus' character with this series, and I absolutely love that I get to help tell this story.”

PLANET OF THE APES: URSUS features a main cover illustrated by Paolo Rivera (Daredevil), an intermix cover by Michael Allred (Silver Surfer), a subscription cover by Becca Carey (The Waves That Break), and a variant cover by the legendary Bob Larkin, presented in mock magazine cover format and virgin. This cover by Larkin, who illustrated over a dozen painted covers for Planet of the Apes magazine, was unused during the classic magazine run and has never been published before.

“It’s an incredible honor to be able to show fans this never-before-published cover from Bob Larkin, someone who helped define the Planet of the Apes world for millions of comic fans!” says Dafna Pleban, BOOM! Studios Editor.

Print copies of PLANET OF THE APES: URSUS #1 will be available for sale in January 2018 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or through the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

PLANET OF THE APES: URSUS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to a world-class group of licensed comic book series and ambitious original series, including WWE, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Big Trouble in Little China, Victor LaValle’s Destroyer, Mech Cadet Yu, Grass Kings, and Klaus.

Unboxing October's Loot Crate: Mythical

October's Loot Crate, "Mythical," boasted some of the coolest franchises in all of Geekdom. Buffy, Ghostbusters, Stranger Things, and Thor were all packed into last month's crate. All of them fit perfectly within the theme and sounded like another couldn't miss crate.

The first item in the box was the monthly pin. The pin, boasting art by Gabriel Silveira, featured none other than Dracula. The monthly pins have all been pretty solid this year and have contributed to my new pin addiction. This one is definitely finding a spot on my backpack.

This month's shirt features the Ghostbusters with an 80's twist. You can't go wrong with the Ghostbusters logo on a tee! Out of all the tee's I own, I (oddly) don't have a Ghostbusters one. Loot Crate corrected that issue with this crate!

Being a HUGE Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan, I was excited when I found out that it was going to be a part of the crate. Unfortunately, it was a less than spectacular item. As much as I love "Mr. Pointy," a Buffy bookmark was a bit of a let down.

This box gave us not one, but two figures! The first was an exclusive Thor and Loki PhatMojo figure. Timed for the release of Thor Ragnarok, this was the second piece in the PhatMojo line of exclusive Loot Crate figures.

The second figure, and last item in the box, was an exclusive Stranger Things item! The SuperEmoScenes Diorama Figure features Eleven and the Demogorgon.

Inside October's Loot Crate:

-SuperEmoScenes Stranger Things Diorama (J Salvador/Loot Crate)

-Ghostbusters T-Shirt (Loot Crate)

-Thor and Loki PhatMojo Figure (PhatMojo)

-Buffy the Vampire Slayer Bookmark (Loot Crate)

-Dracula Pin (Loot Crate)

GHOSTBUSTERS x STRANGERS THINGS Reebok Launch Party Event at BAIT

As "Stranger Things" fans get stoked to binge watch the show's second season on Netflix, Sony Pictures Consumer Products is teaming with Reebok and BAIT for a Limited Edition run of the Reebok Ex-O-Fit Hi Clean model, featuring exclusive designs inspired by the 1984 classic Ghostbusters film.

For the upcoming season, the "Stranger Things" producers teamed with Ghost Corps on the show's Ghostbusters storyline, and Sony Pictures Consumer Products put the collaboration together. As a backstory, we find Ghostbusters superfan Dustin has modified his Ex-O-Fit Hi by drawing his own Ghostbusters designs onto the shoe.  The shoes with that design will now be available for die-hard sneakerheads and fans.

"80s nostalgia is running at a fever pitch, and excitement and fondness for the classic Ghostbusters seems to grow every year.  It makes total sense that in the fall of 1984, Dustin and his friends would be nuts for Ghostbusters," said Ivan Reitman, director and producer of the 1984 film Ghostbusters and partner, Ghost Corps.

"We're thrilled to have collaborated with the 'Stranger Things' team and are so excited to team with Reebok and BAIT to make Dustin's customized Ex-O-Fit Hi a reality," adds Jamie Stevens, EVP Sony Pictures Worldwide Consumer Products.

The shoes will be released first exclusively at BAIT retailers worldwide this October, and then at premium sneaker stores globally, including (but not limited to) Reebok stores in Japan and online, Undefeated stores everywhere, colette in Paris, Mita and Atmos in Tokyo, Kasina in Korea, and Juice in Hong Kong.

A launch party to commemorate the collaboration and launch was held in Los Angeles.

In addition to the Reebok and BAIT collaboration, Sony Pictures Consumer Products and Netflix have teamed up on a line of other co-branded merchandise, including Hybrid Apparel, Funko Pop Vinyls, and Microsoft Minecraft skins, which will be available this fall at select retailers.
