Cecil Castellucci Tells All in Graphic Memoir GIRL ON FILM From BOOM! Studios

BOOM! Studios announced GIRL ON FILM, a new original graphic novel memoir from award-winning young adult novelist and Eisner-nominated comic book writer, Cecil Castellucci, illustrated by artists Vicky Leta, Jon Berg, V. Gagnon, and Melissa Duffy, available in November 2019. Based on the true story of her own free-spirited coming-of-age as a young, independent creative who fell in love with the art of storytelling, Cecil’s memoir also depicts the nuanced connection between experience and memory.

In 1977, Star Wars released in theaters nationwide and changed young Cecil Castellucci’s life forever. From that moment on, she knew that she would one day become an artist and storyteller who brought her own imagination to life. Thus began the evolution of the young starstruck fan into an aspiring theater kid (who was childhood friends with Jennifer Aniston and Chaz Bono), a teenage artiste running wild in ‘80s New York, an indie musician in the Montreal punk scene, and finally the acclaimed author and bestselling comic book writer she is today. Along the way, she found that even though nothing ever went according to plan, everything happened the way it should have.

Chronicling the life of award-winning young adult novelist and Eisner-nominated comics scribe Cecil Castellucci, GIRL ON FILM follows a passionate aspiring artist from the youngest age through adulthood to examine the arduous pursuit of making art, while exploring the act of memory and how it reshapes what we think we truly know about ourselves.

Cecil Castellucci is the New York Times bestselling author of books and graphic novels for young adults including Shade the Changing Girl, The Plain Janes, and The Year of the Beasts. In 2015, she co-authored Star Wars Moving Target: A Princess Leia Adventure. Her short stories and short comics have been published in various anthologies and literary journals. In a former life, she was known as Cecil Seaskull in the ‘90s indie band Nerdy Girl. She has written two opera librettos Les Aventures de Madame Merveille (World Premiere in 2010) and Hockey Noir: The Opera (World Premiere 2018). Castellucci is currently writing The Female Furies for DC Comics. She is the former Children’s Correspondence Coordinator for The Rumpus, a two-time MacDowell Fellow, and the founding YA Editor at the LA Review of Books. She lives in Los Angeles.

“When I think about it, I have always been most fascinated with telling stories. At first, I thought I would become the next Steven Spielberg. But turns out that early dream of aspiring filmmaker was just the first in a series of surprising creative aspirations that led me to where I am today,” said writer Cecil Castellucci. “I wanted to trace the path that brought me to this moment in my life but recalling the past is always a tricky thing. You could be remembering something exactly as it happened or looking at it through the lens of hindsight and other lived experiences. So this is me putting together the story of my life, mining my memories and very excited to work with four such talented artists to craft something between memory and fiction about dedicating my life to making art in every form I could in order to fulfil that childhood dream of one day becoming the girl on film, on vinyl, on paper, and preserved in the memories of others forever.”

Vicky Leta is an illustrator and cartoonist from Brooklyn, NY. Leta’s work has been recognized as a finalist in the 2018 Ghost City Comics 5x5 Fest and as a winner of the 2018 Creative Quarterly #53. She is also the creator of the webcomic Generic Lottery, which debuted in 2016.

"I'm absolutely thrilled to work on GIRL ON FILM, where Cecil takes us into New York in the ‘80s through the lens of an aspiring young artist.” said artist Vicky Leta. “Her story is one that certainly relates close to home, so I'm excited and honored to be a part of it!"

Jon Berg is a Canadian illustrator & cartoonist whose children's book Rosie and Rolland in the Legendary Show-and-Tell was published by Owl Kids in spring 2015. Berg has self-published a number of comics including Blackout, Look After You, and Deveaux. He has also contributed to the Toronto Comics Anthology: Osgoode as Gold, Strange Romance Vol. 3, and Called Into Being: A Celebration of Frankenstein.

"GIRL ON FILM is a unique perspective on the fascinating process of pursuing an artistic life. I'm grateful and excited to be a part of bringing Cecil's journey to the comic page." said artist Jon Berg.

V. Gagnon is an illustrator, concept artist, and comic creator whose work often explores urban legends, folklore, history, and horror. They graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Illustration and currently reside in Portland, OR.

"We all partake in these unique life-long journeys that shift and change when we look back on them, and there's so much to learn there.” said artist V. Gagnon. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to work with this great team and bring Cecil’s journey to life!"

Melissa Duffy is an illustrator and comic artist based on the East Coast. She has done work for IDW and featured in many independently published anthologies, as well as self-publishing her own comic, Outward.

"Let’s talk about GIRL ON FILM” said artist Melissa Duffy. “Is the backdrop of a legendary arts high school in 1980’s New York an incredibly cool time and place to be? Yes. Is it an honor to be bringing YA heavyweight Cecil Castellucci’s own memories to new life on the page? Yes. Is this the artistic coming of age memoir that I’m excited for the world to read? YES!”

GIRL ON FILM is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ ambitious Archaia imprint, home to graphic novels such as Mouse Guard by David Petersen; New World by David Jesus Vignolli; Jane by Aline Brosh McKenna and Ramón Pérez; About Betty’s Boob by Vero Cazot and Julie Rocheleau; Bolivar by Sean Rubin; and licensed series including Lev Grossman’s The Magicians: Alice’s Story by Lilah Sturges and Pius Bak; Jim Henson’s The Power of the Dark Crystal and Jim Henson’s Labyrinth: Coronation.

“GIRL ON FILM is Cecil’s love letter to her young artistic self and to all the other creatives who want to leave their mark on the world. With her as a guide, we get to explore a slice of New York City preserved in her memory and follow her wondrous journey as it twists and turns, culminating into the vision of an artist who’s done it all.” said Sierra Hahn, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “And as if the details about growing up in the heart of Times Square, avoiding Cher, and skipping over Keith Haring chalk drawings aren’t compelling enough, you’ll find photographic evidence of her childhood right next to the amazing illustrations of artists Vicky Leta, Jon Berg, V. Gagnon, and Melissa Duffy.”

Print copies of GIRL ON FILM will be available for sale November 13, 2019 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), on November 19, 2019 at bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

The Power Rangers arrive in New York City to find Tommy Oliver - AKA The Mighty Morphin Green Ranger - but soon discover he's joined forces with the villainous Shredder and the Foot Clan! As the Rangers are sent reeling by this betrayal, they're confronted by another (fr)enemy - the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Can these heroes find a way to work together to defeat the bad guys and save the world from total destruction?!

"Honestly, I'm pretty certain keeping this project a secret has taken years off my life. These two iconic franchises were my TV parents, each teaching me valuable life lessons thirty minutes at a time. The Power Rangers and the Ninja Turtles are too insanely awesome not to bring together. I mean, they're both color-coded teenage martial artists who fight monsters! It just makes too much sense!" said writer Ryan Parrott. "A huge thank you to Hasbro and Nickelodeon for letting me play with so many of their wonderful toys, as it is truly an honor to be a part of such an exciting crossover. I'm the luckiest kid in the world, and I cannot wait for you all to see what we've been putting together."

"It’s an honor to be able to work on this amazing project. I'm very happy to be a part of this, one of the crossovers I've been waiting for since I was a kid,” said artist Simone di Meo. “Drawing these two teams together is a dream come true!"

Currently, Power Rangers is celebrating 26 continuous years on the air, making it one of the longest running kids’ live-action series in television history with nearly 900 episodes aired to date. Created by Haim Saban and launched in 1993 with Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, the franchise celebrates its milestone anniversary year with the 26th season, Power Rangers Beast Morphers currently airing on Saturdays at 8 a.m. (ET/PT) on Nickelodeon in the U.S.

“No one could possibly love the Power Rangers or the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles more than the creative team at the helm of this epic event! Which means they’ve got every dream team up scenario you can think of jam-packed into the pages of every issue.” said Dafna Pleban, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Monsters will grow. Shells will get kicked. Venom: One Scoops up for Pre-order

The Venom: One Scoops designer toy is now up for pre-order at Sideshow for only $85.00! Also up for pre-order are the Deadpool: One Scoops and Ghost Rider: One Scoops.

From Sideshow:

Every ice cream party needs the right host. The Venom: One-Scoops designer toy by artist Erik Scoggan puts a swirl of symbiote sweetness right within your grasp.

Artist Bio: Erik Scoggan is a graphic artist from Southern California who was raised on superhero cartoons, junk food, and ‘The Far Side’ comics. Utilizing pop art and surrealist influences, the tone of his work gravitates towards the off-centered and humorous.

Artist Statement: The ‘One-Scoops’ Designer Toy Series is a quirky homage to the ‘Marvel One-Shots’ series of comics, but you know... if the characters were ice cream cones! I have lots of memories of excitedly chasing down ice cream trucks on my bike when I was growing up, only to be met with a face on my frosty treat that only sort of resembled the character – I always thought that was really funny. For these pieces, it was also really important to me to make the cones removable, because I want people to be able to hold them and play with them, and hopefully be taken back to when they were a kid!

Also, please DO NOT try to eat these figures (as tasty as they may look).

Unboxing July's Marvel Collector Corps- Spider-Man: Far From Home

I thought that I had canceled my Marvel Collector Corps subscription after the Avengers: Endgame theme. Apparently I didn't and the newest box, Spider-Man: Far From Home ended up on my doorstep. This was yet another disappointment from the once great MCC. Ever since the subscription moved to Amazon the quality of items included has dropped drastically.

First up in the box was a Midtown School of Science and Technology drawstring backpack. The backpack is thin, small, and pretty low in quality. It may be good as a lunch bag, but that's about it.

Next up was a Spider-Man decal. Yeah, it's pretty useless.

The third item in the box was a Spider-Man hacky sack. I feel like I'm back in middle school in the early 90's. So...another useless item.

The first POP! in the box was a Peter Parker (Borrowed Jersey) POP! I'm not 100% sure, as I don't remember, but from what I've read, the logo is on the wrong side. If that's the case, then that's going to be a real bummer as Funko had the same problem with the Captain America Mjolnir/shield figure from the Avengers: Endgame box. Honestly, I would have liked to have had some variety and gotten a Ned, Maria Hill, Zombie Iron Man, Aunt May, or even a Flash Thompson figure instead.

The final and best item in the box was a light-up Mysterio POP! This is the second light-up figure after the Walgreens exclusive Iron Man from Infinity War. Fans were wondering when and what the next light-up figure would be and now we have an answer. The effect is really cool and definitely appropriate.

The September box theme is Marvel: 80 Years. As much as these Amazon sub boxes have been hit and miss, I'm definitely all in on this one. I have the feeling that I'm going to be yet again disappointed, but how can I pass up a box that celebrates 80 years of Marvel goodness? Let's hope that Funko/Marvel pull out all the stops and gives fans something worth celebrating.

Image Comics "Coffin Bound" #1 Releases August 7th

Image Comics forthcoming ongoing comic book series Coffin Bound by Dan Watters (Sandman Universe: Lucifer) and artist Dani (2000AD, Girl with No Name) with colorist Brad Simpson (JESUSFREAK, MCMLXXV), letterer Aditya Bidikar, and designer Emma Price, set to launch this August.

Cars! Guns! Entropy! Coffin Bound follows Izzy Tyburn, who is chased by an unstoppable killer and has decided that if the world won’t have her in it, it can have nothing of her at all. She’s re-treading her life, leaving nothing but burned rubber, ash, and the sun-scorched bones of those who get in her way. Ride shotgun on an unforgettable road trip through blood-splattered, grindhouse action best described as Bitch Planet and Mad Max: Fury Road set in the dark, twisted fantasy world of Sandman.

Coffin Bound #1 hits stores on Wednesday, August 7.

Coffin Bound #2 hits stores on Wednesday, September 11.

Select praise for Coffin Bound:

"It's a gleeful of literary grindhouse comic that brings to mind Milligan's Arthouse Pulp and notes of Pretty Deadly. Out in August. Pre-order now." Kieron Gillen

"Dani is quite a discovery: the work is very inventive and actually very careful but the line is alive and organic, the ink just spills down and branches into the right places. And the language style Watters launches here is just wonderful. I summon Milch because it's eccentric and neo-antique like his DEADWOOD speech, rippling with character and drunken with its own pleasure... Coffin Bound is a damned joy"
Warren Ellis

"A Lynchian crime chase desert noir fever dream with its own messed up internal logic. Fun." Rob Williams

"An acid drenched road trip, seeping violence and weirdness of the best kind. Definitely one to check out." Ollie Masters

"Gorgeous and odd and very much its own unique monster. I am jealous at its filthy strangeness." Ivan Brandon

"A gore-splattered, but poetic road trip with one of the strangest stripper scenes in comics." John Harris Dunning

"Dreamlike, mythic, relentless and strange." Kurt Busiek

"Pure Doom. Watters spins a fantastic Kerouac-ian fever dream with Dani dropping some story chops, solid gesture and moody blacks. It's a great hook that will take you Under. Coffin Bound Rules!" Andy Belanger

"Your lessons of life delivered at the end of a muzzle by a choir of grindhouse philosophers laced with the wisdom of dead birds. I can hardly think of another story so fully infused with Dan Watters and Dani aesthetic." Ram V

"Coffin Bound is a distillate of madness. A slice of apocalyptic dreamtime cut with engine smoke, acid nihilism and dirty juju. This is some top-class necrofuel, my friends, and you need it in your brain-tank pronto." Si Spurrier

"Coffin Bound is a comic with a strong pulse that bleeds all over your hands while reading. You should give it a read." Declan Shalvey
