Spider-Man & Punisher Marvel x L.A. Gear Shoes

Marvel and L.A Gear teamed up to release a line of character themed athletic shoes. Oddly, they seem to have been released without much fanfare. In fact, I had never heard of them until I stumbled upon them one day on hottopic.com. I had been searching for Spider-Man items on their site when they popped up. From what I've been able to track down, they've made shoes based on Spider-Man, Captain America, Deadpool, Iron Man, The Punisher, and Black Panther. So far I've purchased the Spider-Man and Punisher shoes with an eye towards the Black Panther pair.

I haven't seen or even thought about L.A. Gear in over twenty years. The shoes were popular in the 80's/early 90's. The brand seemed to have disappeared along with other once popular brands like K-Swiss and British Knights (raise your hand if you remember those!). L.A. Gear was so big that at one point they made Michael Jackson branded shoes.

The Spider-Man version comes in a lightweight low top. The shoes are blue, red and black and feature both a Marvel and spider logo on the tongue. The insoles are made of memory foam and feature a picture of Spidey. They seem to be a pretty well made pair of shoes. I'm not the biggest fan of the look of the shoe, but I'm a huge Spidey fan so I picked them up because Spider-Man.

The Punisher shoes come in a black and grey high top. Again, the insoles are made of memory foam. Like the Spidey shoes, the tongue features Punisher's skull logo. The logo is also featured on the bottom of the shoe and on a tag with the Marvel logo on the side. They aren't as light as the Spidey ones, obviously, but they're a solid pair of shoes. These ones look much better than the Spidey pair. It would have been nice had they been more lightweight, but overall, they're a pretty killer shoe.

BOOM! Studios Announces Tyson Hesse's Diesel: Gear Shift Special

BOOM! Studios is excited to announce the return of Dee Diesel in TYSON HESSE’S DIESEL: GEAR SHIFT SPECIAL, an all-new follow-up to the BOOM! Box imprint’s most successful original graphic novel. The one-shot will debut in comic shops in October.

“I can’t wait to continue telling Dee’s story as she faces a new world of danger and takes on real responsibilities for the first time,” says Hesse. “Gear Shift takes Dee and her crew in a totally new direction that I think fans of the first story will really enjoy!”

Dee’s journey first began on Tyson Hesse’s (Boxer Hockey) personal blog, when Dee and her fellow Peacetowne inhabitants were featured as original character designs. Inspired by “adventure manga like One Piece and stories about burgeoning friendships like How to Train Your Dragon,” Hesse created Dee, a young girl with an airship trying to live up to the legacy of her father, a world-famous pilot. Since then, Dee and her friends have gained a huge cult following and were first published in print via BOOM! Studios as a limited series in 2015 and an original graphic novel in 2016, Tyler Hesse’s Diesel: Ignition, which drew wide acclaim.

“Diesel: Gear Shift picks up right where Diesel: Ignition left off,” explains Hesse. “It’s a chance for fans of the first graphic novel to jump right in to the next story arc right away. Dee and Bull Diesel have reconnected with their lost crew and are on their way back home to regroup and prepare for the long journey ahead.  But when they get back to Peacetowne, they uncover new clues that set them off in search of other Diesel brothers that could have answers to all their questions.”

“Diesel feels both completely fresh and totally timeless,” says BOOM! Studios Editor Shannon Watters. “Dee's story is one that Tyson has held close to his heart for years, and it shows in the care and joy bursting from every page."

Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed BOOM! Box imprint, home to popular original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooke A. Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Backstagers by James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh; SLAM! by Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

Print copies of Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special are available for sale in October at local comic book shops (to find a shop near you, visit comicshoplocator.com) or through the BOOM! Studios webstore, and digital copies can be purchased from content providers including comiXology, Kindle, iTunes, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Unboxing June's Loot Crate: Alter Ego

June's Loot Crate theme, Alter Ego, tied in perfectly with the recently released Spider-Man: Homecoming film. Looter's were treated to a crate featuring Marvel, Transformers, DC Comics, and more. The box was both a hit and miss affair. While the all of the franchises were awesome, I didn't necessarily go gaga over every item.

First up in the crate was a mini-poster book from DC Comics. The book contained 40 removable posters featuring DC's New 52. These postcard sized pics are perfect for framing.

Next up was an Incredible Hulk-themed bowl for when you're hangry and need to feed the beast. The quality of the bowl isn't exactly the greatest (it's pretty thin), but it'll work for my morning bowl of Frosted Flakes.

This month's t-shirt and pin were definitely on point. The shirt features Optimus Prime transforming from semi to robot. The art was perfect and the color of the tee was also. Designed by Marcelo Matere, this is one of LC's best shirts to date. The pin was equally as cool with Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. Both fit the theme of the box perfectly.

The digital loot came with two awesome DLC offerings. The first was "limited time exclusive" version of the Green Ranger V2 for Saban's Power Rangers: Legacy Wars mobile game. The second was comics from Valiant and Comixology.

The last and best part of the box was the exclusive Spider-Man Q-Fig variant. Made especially to coincide with the film's release, Looter's get another awesome Q-Fig for their ever-growing collection of exclusive figure's. The black and white Spidey is a "nod to his connection to the Daily Bugle..." It comes housed in a custom box designed to "mimic one of the many front pages of J. Jonah Jameson's newspaper dedicated to the web-slinger." Spidey is my all-time favorite character, making this box worth every penny for me.

Inside June's crate:

-Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde Pin (Loot Crate)
-Optimus Prime G1 T-Shirt (Loot Crate)
-Incredible Hulk Bowl (Vandor)
-DC Comics Poster Book (Insight Editions)
-Valiant Comics DLC (Valiant)
-Green Ranger V2 DLC (Saban)
-Spider-Man Q-Fig Variant (QMx)

Unboxing June's Marvel Collector Corps: Spider-Man: Homecoming

With Spidey swinging into theaters with his first official MCU film, Marvel Collector Corps' theme for June was "Spider-Man: Homecoming." I'm a HUGE Spider-Man fan, so ordering this box was a no-brainer. That being said, my expectations for this one were pretty high. Unfortunately, this box didn't deliver for me. It's not that the quality was lacking, more the fact that what was included in the box was less than amazing (yeah, I went there).

First up in the box were the patch and pin. These were actually pretty awesome. The pin features Spidey's web shooter hologram and the patch of The Vulture was really well done. Both of them found a place on my backpack.

Next up was Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #1. This issue, like all MCC comics, comes with an alternate POP!-inspired variant cover. This one featured Spider-Man and Vulture.

The T-shirt included was a "Midtown School of Science and Technology" logo tee. While I like the tee as a Spider-Man fan, this one was a bit of a letdown. The neatest part of Funko's boxes is that all of the items are supposed to be exclusives. Unfortunately, you can find the same version of this shirt at stores like Hot Topic. They're not made by Funko, but they are the same.

Finally, we get to the figures. There were two Mystery Mini's and a POP! figure included this month. There were four possible Mystery Mini's (Spider-Man, Homemade Suit Spider-Man, The Vulture, and Shocker). This box contained Spider-Man and Shocker.

The POP! figure was by far the best part of the box. This one was Spider-Man with his web wings. It's not the most exciting figure (I was hoping for a Spidey swinging on a web), but it's a nice variant to have.

Inside this month's MCC:

-Vulture Patch
-Spider-Man Web Shooter Hologram Pin
-Shocker Mystery Mini
-Spider-Man Mystery Mini
-Midtown School T-shirt
-Peter Parker #1 Variant Cover
-Spider-Man with Web Wings Pop! Figure
