Step into an Afro-Futurist Adventure with All New Original Graphic Novel KUDZU: HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN from BOOM! Studios

BOOM! Studios announced today KUDZU: HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN, a brand new original graphic novel from cartoonist Dustin Bolton, presents a stunning new vision of sci-fi and fantasy fused together in an unforgettable story about discovering your future by first understanding your past.

Years after a worldwide ecological disaster, a young boy named Kudzu uncovers his family history...which is tied to the terrible event that destroyed the world! But as he learns the truth, Kudzu is drawn into a clash of worlds that threatens all of mankind, but may also be the key to giving the planet a new start.

Dustin Alexander Bolton is an artist and writer from Memphis, TN. Bolton earned his Bachelor of Arts in Film and Animation from Rhode Island School of Design before beginning his professional career in Atlanta, GA.  He forged his early career as an animator on several popular Adult Swim shows, including Harvey Birdman. Bolton's professional roles have since evolved through various advertising roles for major brands, including Disney, Warner Media, and AT&T.  His debut graphic novel emerges from the high tech-fantasy in 80's pop culture and sci-fi films, the magical worlds crafted by Studio Ghibli's Hayao Miyazaki, and the rich cultural heritage of African American families across the American south.

"I'm so excited to unveil the world of KUDZU with its mythic beasts, rusty mechs, and caverns full of a mysterious power called tama,"said cartoonist, Dustin Bolton. “I also can’t wait for everyone to meet Kudzu, the boy who bonds with an ancient power to save his fragile homeland from the grips of a tyrant, and ultimately discovers the power that lies within himself.

KUDZU: HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning KaBOOM! imprint, home to comics for middle grade and younger readers including licensed series such as Adventure Time, Steven Universe, Regular Show, Ben 10, and Over The Garden Wall, along with original series like Just Beyond: The Scare School by R.L. Stine and Kelly & Nichole Matthews, Hex Vet by Sam Davies, RuinWorld by Derek Laufman,  Hotel Dare by Terry Blas and Claudia Aguirre, and Pandora’s Legacy by Kara Leopard and Kelly & Nichole Matthews.

“This is a truly excellent graphic novel for fans of adventure, science fiction, fantasy, and crazy heroics—so, a little bit of everything for everyone.”said Chris Rosa, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Dustin takes us on an adventure that spans across a magical world full of new discoveries, as well as new dangers, as young Kudzu and his friends set off to save the world.”

Print copies of KUDZU: HEART OF THE MOUNTAIN will be available for sale in August 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

Unboxing- GameStop Black Friday Marvel Mystery Box

As much as I love Marvel, I decided to initially pass on GameStop's Black Friday Marvel Mystery Box. Mainly because I'm trying to be more selective and less impulsive with my Funko purchases (that's how I ended up with hundreds of them!). But when they had their "Deal of the Day" leading up to Christmas and dropped them to $10.00, I couldn't refuse. Luckily for my wallet, they only had one box left at the GameStop I went to, and I grabbed it and went straight to the counter without looking at anything else.

I opened the box and the first thing my eye went to was the Groot (Gamer) sticker sitting on top. I am not a fan of the Funko stickers in the mystery boxes we've been getting ever since they started offering the Collector Corps subs on Amazon. They feel cheap and lazy compared to the patches and pins we used to get.

The next thing my eye went to was the "Chase" sticker on the Groot (Gamer) POP! I've found chases on the shelf before, but I've never scored on in a mystery box. Being a Spider-Man fan, I'd have preferred the Miles Morales chase, but I'm not gonna complain! A chase in a $10.00 box? Yes, please! Plus, it's Groot. As a gamer. Who doesn't love Groot?

The next item I pulled out of the box was a Groot (Gamer) keychain. I have a pretty decent sized collection of Funko keychains, even though I really don't use any of them. But they're fun to collect, and this one is pretty awesome.

Next up was a big surprise. We actually got a pin in the mystery box! I love the Funko pins, and this Guardians of the Galaxy one is gonna look nice on the old jacket!

Finally, I got an exclusive Deadpool (Gamer) Pez dispenser. I only have one other Funko Pez dispenser (the Box Lunch exclusive Deadpool). So this one is gonna go right next to that one on the shelf.

Overall, this was a solid Black Friday box from GameStop. Last years, which was Disney afternoon-themed, was kind of a disappointment for me. I bought one and ended up giving it away. In fact, I don't even remember what was in it. I'm very tempted to pick up at least one other Black Friday box (even at full price) and trying my luck. Really want that Spider-Man!

Inside the GameStop Black Friday Marvel Mystery Box:

-Groot (Gamer) Chase Funko POP! Figure
-Groot (Gamer) Sticker
-Groot (Gamer) Keychain
-Deadpool (Gamer) Pez Dispenser
-Guardians of the Galaxy Pin

John Allison and Max Sarin Announce WICKED THINGS with BOOM! Studios in 2020

BOOM! Studios is proud to announce  WICKED THINGS, reuniting the Eisner Award-winning team, writer John Allison (Steeple, Bad Machinery), artist Max Sarin, colorist Whitney Cogar, and letterer Jim Campbell for a new original six-issue series about everyone’s favorite young detective from the world of Giant Days: Charlotte Grote.

Nineteen year old Charlotte “Lottie” Grote has her whole life ahead of her; headed straight to university and a future as a real detective—until she’s framed for murder! Given the choice between going to jail basically forever or joining the police, Lottie decides to hit the beat, all while trying to find the real murderer. Lottie may have been running rings about the police since her 9th birthday, but she’s never been on this side of the security tape. Could the future of law enforcement be 5’2” with an extremely strong bangs game? Yes. Very yes.

Based in Letchworth Garden City, UK, John Allison is the creator of the comic series Giant Days, By Night, and Steeple, and of the all-ages book series Bad Machinery. In addition, he created the webcomics Bobbins and Scary Go Round, with his work appearing online since 1998. He was one of the first comic artists to build a daily following exclusively on the internet.

John's various comics have been nominated for Eisner Awards every year from 2016-2019, and in 2018 he won the Best Long-Form Online Comic award from the US National Cartoonists’ Society. Giant Days has sold almost half a million copies worldwide, won Eisner Awards for Best Continuing Series and Best Humor Publication, and is currently being published in seven foreign language editions.

“WICKED THINGS is a tale I’ve been waiting years to tell—the story of what happens when a precocious teen detective ages out of their division overnight. Lottie Grote is the crown jewel of my little comics universe, and I don’t think she could be in safer artistic hands than Max Sarin, whose work gets better every month.” said writer John Allison. “I’m delighted the GIANT DAYS team is back together so soon.”

Max Sarin is the National Cartoonist Award-winning comic book artist and illustrator from Finland who is known for their work on the Eisner Award-winning series Giant Days with creator John Allison.

"From Slice of Life to Slice of Crime! Some WICKED THINGS are coming our way!" said artist Max Sarin.

WICKED THINGS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; Heavy Vinyl by Carly Usdin and Nina Vakueva; b.b. free by Gabby Rivera and Royal Dunlap; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

“Sarah Grote’s little sister Lottie is all grown up, and now she’s a crime fighting teen who’s admittedly still running blindly into situations and getting into trouble. We meet her now as John and Max throw her right from the frying pan into the fire and the trouble Lottie gets into comes with a capital ‘T’,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “If you’re a fan of Giant Days, murder, mystery, mayhem—or all of the above—do yourself a favor and dive right in!”

Print copies of WICKED THINGS #1 will be available in March 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.
