John Allison and Max Sarin Announce WICKED THINGS with BOOM! Studios in 2020

BOOM! Studios is proud to announce  WICKED THINGS, reuniting the Eisner Award-winning team, writer John Allison (Steeple, Bad Machinery), artist Max Sarin, colorist Whitney Cogar, and letterer Jim Campbell for a new original six-issue series about everyone’s favorite young detective from the world of Giant Days: Charlotte Grote.

Nineteen year old Charlotte “Lottie” Grote has her whole life ahead of her; headed straight to university and a future as a real detective—until she’s framed for murder! Given the choice between going to jail basically forever or joining the police, Lottie decides to hit the beat, all while trying to find the real murderer. Lottie may have been running rings about the police since her 9th birthday, but she’s never been on this side of the security tape. Could the future of law enforcement be 5’2” with an extremely strong bangs game? Yes. Very yes.

Based in Letchworth Garden City, UK, John Allison is the creator of the comic series Giant Days, By Night, and Steeple, and of the all-ages book series Bad Machinery. In addition, he created the webcomics Bobbins and Scary Go Round, with his work appearing online since 1998. He was one of the first comic artists to build a daily following exclusively on the internet.

John's various comics have been nominated for Eisner Awards every year from 2016-2019, and in 2018 he won the Best Long-Form Online Comic award from the US National Cartoonists’ Society. Giant Days has sold almost half a million copies worldwide, won Eisner Awards for Best Continuing Series and Best Humor Publication, and is currently being published in seven foreign language editions.

“WICKED THINGS is a tale I’ve been waiting years to tell—the story of what happens when a precocious teen detective ages out of their division overnight. Lottie Grote is the crown jewel of my little comics universe, and I don’t think she could be in safer artistic hands than Max Sarin, whose work gets better every month.” said writer John Allison. “I’m delighted the GIANT DAYS team is back together so soon.”

Max Sarin is the National Cartoonist Award-winning comic book artist and illustrator from Finland who is known for their work on the Eisner Award-winning series Giant Days with creator John Allison.

"From Slice of Life to Slice of Crime! Some WICKED THINGS are coming our way!" said artist Max Sarin.

WICKED THINGS is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; Heavy Vinyl by Carly Usdin and Nina Vakueva; b.b. free by Gabby Rivera and Royal Dunlap; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

“Sarah Grote’s little sister Lottie is all grown up, and now she’s a crime fighting teen who’s admittedly still running blindly into situations and getting into trouble. We meet her now as John and Max throw her right from the frying pan into the fire and the trouble Lottie gets into comes with a capital ‘T’,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “If you’re a fan of Giant Days, murder, mystery, mayhem—or all of the above—do yourself a favor and dive right in!”

Print copies of WICKED THINGS #1 will be available in March 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores, or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and Madefire.

HEAVY VINYL Returns with New Graphic Novel from BOOM! Studios in 2020

Your favorite girl gang is back and on the brink of a new millennium! It’s the summer of 1999, and while the staff of Vinyl Destination is dealing with growing up and getting out into the world, the tension over Y2K is mounting into an all-out panic! Can this group of music-loving vigilantes balance their work lives with their dating lives, prevent the total collapse of modern society, AND be home in time for dinner?! Only one way to find out!

Carly Usdin is an award-winning filmmaker based in Los Angeles. Her first feature, Suicide Kale, won the Audience Award for Best First Feature at Outfest 2016.  Carly is also the creator and writer of two comic book series for BOOM! Studios: Heavy Vinyl and The Avant-Guards. Heavy Vinyl was nominated for a 2018 Prism Award, honoring the best in LGBTQIA+ comics.

Carly has recently completed her short film Misdirection, created as part of the American Film Institute’s Directing Workshop for Women, class of 2019. Currently she is developing several projects through her production company Scheme Machine Studios, which she owns with her wife, photographer and producer Robin Roemer.

“Getting the chance to continue the Heavy Vinyl story is a dream come true! I'm thrilled to be reunited with my precious little ‘90s babies. The story picks up a few months later -- it's 1999, digital music and file sharing have upset the status quo, and Y2K approaches!!” said writer, Carly Usdin. “You can expect the same level of exhaustively-researched pop culture references with new characters, a new mystery, and more Chris/Maggie cuteness. I've been having a great time writing it, and I can't wait for fans to read it.”

Nina Vakueva is a self-taught freelance artist born and based in Moscow. She graduated from Moscow Architectural University in 2014, worked briefly for the Architectural Bureau then moved to comic books and character design. Nina worked as part of Russian comic studio, Bubble, and currently works as an artist on Heavy Vinyl for BOOM! Studios, League of Legends: Ashe - Warmother for Marvel Entertainment, and on her original webcomic, Lilith's Word.

“It’s time for Chris and the rest of the vigilante girl group from HEAVY VINYL to tackle Y2K!” said artist Nina Vakueva. “These teens are always up for a big adventure, so catch them hacking computers and fighting crime, all while playing their favorite music and having fun with their friends in the new HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O!”

The HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O! cover will feature artwork by Nina Vakueva.

“We’re absolutely thrilled to be teaming up with Carly and Nina to bring everyone a brand new graphic novel set in the kick-ass, action-packed world of Heavy Vinyl.” said Shannon Watters,  Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “There’ll be plenty of sweet, sweet lady romance, action, mystery, and late ‘90s fashion and goofy good times in this love letter to the historic manic panic of the Y2K craze.”

HEAVY VINYL: Y2K-O! is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ award-winning BOOM! Box imprint, home to groundbreaking original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooklyn Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Avant-Guards by Carly Usdin and Noah Hayes; Misfit City by Kiwi Smith, Kurt Lustgarten, and Naomi Franquiz; Fence by C.S. Pacat and Johanna The Mad; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

Sweeney Boo and Lylian’s EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF From BOOM! Studios

BOOM! Studios today announced a brand new original graphic novel, based on the successful Kickstarter campaign, from the creative duo of cartoonist Sweeney Boo (Love Is Love) and co-writer Lylian (Ellana), EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF, about a young woman who struggles with society’s image of her body and personhood then finds a magical item that takes her on an incredible journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance, available in stores April 2020.

Mindy is a young woman living with an eating disorder and trapped in a battle for her own self-worth. When she accidentally discovers something that will give her a chance to revisit her past—the relationships she’s lost, the mistakes she’s made, all of it— she thinks she has a chance to undo every wrong turn, to put her life back on track. But will she be able to find a way back to her present, and just as important, a way to treat herself with love and kindness, at any size?

Sweeney Boo is a comic artist and illustrator living in Montreal, Canada. She started working as a comic letterer and colorist for French publishers right after graduation, while pursuing her dream of being a comic artist. She made her comic debut during the summer 2016 when she created a cover and a short story for Image Comics’ Rat Queens. In 2017, she worked on the costume designs of America Chavez, Inferno, and Patriot for the show "Marvel Rising,” combining two of her favorite things, fashion and superheroes. Boo now does work for various publishers including BOOM! Studios, Archie Comics, IDW, Marvel, and Image Comics.

“Working on EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF is a true healing experience for me. I suffered from an eating disorder in my early twenties, and while I was working on myself and getting better, I discovered how taboo and difficult of a subject it was to talk about.” said writer and artist, Sweeney Boo. “This book is for everyone who has a difficult relationship with their body, or just themselves... I want to show everyone that they're beautiful the way they are.”

Lylian is a comic book writer from France. In 2004, Les Humanoids Associés published his first book, L'Éveil du Kurran, designed by Dune and co-written by Nori. In 2010, Lylian adapted novelist Pierre Bottero’s The Quest of Ewilan whose first book is published in the Éditions Glénat in 2013. Passionate about comic books, literature, and cinema, Lylian currently writes several comic book series, adaptations, and original stories that highlight his interest in psychology.

“Working on EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF is first and foremost a human, sincere, profound encounter with Sweeney Boo, who has been carrying this story for years.” said artist, Lylian. “I am honored to be a part of this book that holds such personal meaning for Sweeney.”

EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF is the latest release from BOOM!

“EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF is a timely and deeply personal story about battling society’s expectations and learning to unpack all the toxicity of impossible standards,” said Shannon Watters, Senior Editor, BOOM! Studios. “Sweeney and Lylian bring Sweeney’s own experiences to life in a story that’s magical, moving, and a triumph for people everywhere who fight every day to love who they are.”

Print copies of EAT AND LOVE YOURSELF will be available for sale in April 2020 at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one), bookstores or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Acclaimed Series Misfit City Extended for Second Story Arc

The critically acclaimed MISFIT CITY, from screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You), co-writer Kurt Lustgarten, and artist Naomi Franquiz, kicks off its climactic second story arc in September as the hunt for Black Mary’s treasure reaches a dramatic conclusion, BOOM! Studios announced today. With critical acclaim from all corners, including Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List,” MISFIT CITY is the newest smash hit from the innovative BOOM! Box imprint of BOOM! Studios.

MISFIT CITY is the story of Wilder and her friends, whose hometown is where they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie in the ’80s. Nothing ever happens there, until one day they come upon a centuries-old treasure map drawn by the infamous pirate Black Mary, launching a life-imitates-art adventure in the town they all dreamed of escaping.

“After discovering a secret entrance to the caves at Bootlegger’s Bluff and finding Captain Denby still alive, the next story arc of MISFIT CITY will follow Wilder, Macy, Dot, and Karma as they continue to hunt for Black Mary's treasure,” says Smith. “Their friendship will be tested as romantic entanglements threaten to break the group apart and the stakes are ratcheted up on their adventure. Expect more crackling banter and a hoard of pirate booty... and surprisingly agile assists from Pippin, the dog with no sense of smell.”

“Fans of the series have been incredible with their support and we've had so much fun getting to meet them at signings, conventions, and on Twitter,” says Lustgarten. “Apart from connecting with so many people, the whole experience has been bonding for us as well. It’s our first comic, and our first produced ‘credit’ together, so it’s a true labor of love. This is our baby, so we’re glad it went to school and made friends.”

Print copies of MISFIT CITY #5, which kicks off the second story arc, will be available for sale at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore starting September 20. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers like comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith, Kurt Lustgarten, and Naomi Franquiz Launch New Original Series with BOOM! Box

BOOM! Studios is proud to announce MISFIT CITY, an all-new monthly comic book series from screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (”Legally Blonde,” “10 Things I Hate About You”) and Kurt Lustgarten, along with artist Naomi Franquiz, debuting in May 2017 from the groundbreaking BOOM! Box imprint.

Nothing’s happened in Wilder’s hometown since they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie there in the ’80s…but that’s ancient history. Until one day, she and her friends come upon a centuries-old treasure map drawn by the infamous pirate Black Mary…and they find themselves on a real-life adventure in the town they dreamed of escaping.

"Much like our heroines, I grew up in a small town in the Pacific Northwest, yearning to have a life-changing experience,” says Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith.

“Everyone wishes their town harbored a deep dark secret, and for the girls of Cannon Cove, it does,” adds co-creator Kurt Lustgarten, who also spoke about the particular tone of the book. “We wanted to evoke the feel of every great 1980s kids classic adventure movie with a riot grrrl twist."

“We’re telling a treasure hunting story through a unique female lens,” says Kiwi Smith.  "Girls need their version of The Goonies—and with Misfit City, we’re giving it to them."

"Other than the guaranteed shenanigans I'm excited to draw in Misfit City, I mostly look forward to drawing a diverse and body-positive cast of characters that I hope young readers can really see themselves in. Plus, all faces of the cutest dog ever, Pippin!" remarks Franquiz. "Out of our main characters, I relate to Wilder most. I'm from a small-town city with a population that fluctuates every football season, so the urge to escape and do more is strong. I love her ambition and drive, and I think the internal conflict she's setting herself up for is something I see reflected in many people (including myself)."

Misfit City #1 will feature a main cover by Franquiz, along with a variant cover by Ester Zejn and a treasure map variant by Paulina Ganucheau (Zodiac Starforce, Another Castle).

This series is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed BOOM! Box imprint, home to popular original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooke A. Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Backstagers by James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh; SLAM! by Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

“Kiwi’s work has been a huge creative influence on me, and a massive influence on BOOM! Box,” says Shannon Watters, Editor, BOOM! Studios. “We’re so pleased to be shepherding this awesome team’s first comic book project!”

Lumberjanes #9 Second Print Cover by Brooke Allen
BOOM! Box, an imprint of award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios, is pleased to announce that Lumberjanes #9 from Noelle Stevenson, Shannon Watters, and a host of creative talent, has sold out at the distributor level. The publisher has rushed to a second printing.

Comic book fans should bear in mind that first printings of Lumberjanes #9 may still be found at the local comic shop nearest you. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one!

Lumberjanes is the runaway hit series about five, rad, butt-kicking pals determined to have an awesome summer together at Miss Quinzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types, where things are not what they seem. Hailed by many critics as one of the best comic series of 2014, Lumberjanes was recently honored with a nomination for Outstanding Comic by the LGBT media advocacy organization GLAAD.

In issue #9, in order to earn the “If You’ve Got It, Haunt It” badge, the Lumberjanes head out to the deep, dark woods. But the woods aren’t so scary anymore, now that the Lumberjanes have kicked, punched, and befriended all the fearsome magical monsters out there, so they set out to find the one thing that can still scare them all: campfire stories! Issue #9 is written by Noelle Stevenson & Shannon Watters, and Faith Erin Hicks, featuring art by Hicks, Brittney Williams, Aimee Fleck, Becca Tobin, Carolyn Nowak, Felicia Choo, and T. Zysk.

Praise for Lumberjanes #9:

“...if you enjoy great characters, a fun plot structure that gives each of the characters room to tell us a little more about themselves, with absolutely fabulous art throughout the entire issue, then this is definitely for you.” - Newsarama

“The writing in this issue is top-notch as per usual, with some especially good puns (a bonus for me – ‘If You’ve Got it, Haunt It’ is the perfect name for a ghost story badge). The girls tell their stories not only in their own voice, but the story tries to fit their personality or reveals something about them.” - Adventures in Poor Taste

“This was a delightful issue, with moments of friendship and humor entwined with the spooky tales.” - Comic Bastards

“...this issue is a great showcase of Lumberjanes’ charms, and I can’t wait to see what future issues have in store for us.” - Word of the Nerd

Lumberjanes #9 second print ships from BOOM! Box with a new cover by main series artist Brooke Allen and carries a retail price of $3.99. It is anticipated to be in stores on February 11th.

BOOM! Box, an Imprint of BOOM! Studios, Announces Its First Collected Trade Paperback with 'The Midas Flesh' Vol. 1

Nearly one year ago, award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios announced their newest imprint BOOM! Box, a home for comics “made for the love of it.” The publisher is now pleased to announce the collected first volume of the imprint’s inaugural series, The Midas Flesh. Created by the longtime creative theam behind the Adventure Time comics, writer Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics) and artists Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, The Midas Flesh is an edge-of-your-seat, save-the-universe adventure with two butt-kickin’ ladies and a dinosaur in a spacesuit. The first volume collects issues #1-4 of this quirky space epic and features a casewrap covered in striking gold fingerprints.

“When you create an imprint that’s intended to encourage weird, experimental, and eclectic comics, you have to start off with a series that really embodies that mission,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “The Midas Flesh is just that for BOOM! Box. Ryan, Shelli, and Braden have already proven themselves to be some of the best storytellers in comics with their run on Adventure Time, and they’ve outdone themselves with The Midas Flesh. Plus: dinosaur on a spaceship. Hard to beat that.”

About The Midas Flesh: We’ve all heard of the Midas Touch. You know, the Greek myth about the man who did a number on himself by wishing for everything he touched to turn to gold? Well, you haven’t heard everything. Joey and her space crew have decided to return to Earth—a planet completely sectioned off, abandoned, and covered in gold—to find out exactly what happened to this once thriving planet and see if they can use that knowledge against the evil empire that’s tracking them down. As luck would have it, they just landed the most powerful weapon in the universe: some ancient dead guy’s body.

The Midas Flesh Vol. 1 trade paperback arrives in comic shops on December 3rd with a cover price of $14.99. The cover is illustrated by Emily Partridge (Adventure Time).
