Celia Lowenthal Covers BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #2
BOOM! Studios unveiled a variant cover to BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #2 by fan favorite artist Celia Lowenthal (Over The Garden Wall: Hollow Town). The next chapter of the hotly-anticipated series will debut in-stores February 13th, 2019, in partnership with 20th Century Fox Consumer Products.
The reimagining of Joss Whedon's groundbreaking series continues as Drusilla, the self-proclaimed Mistress and her pet, Spike, make their debut with their sights set on Buffy! Meanwhile, Giles is determined to teach Buffy about her destiny, responsibility, blah blah...can someone tell him to chill? How bad can it get?
Welcome back to the Hellmouth as Eisner Award-nominated writer Jordie Bellaire (Redlands) and Russ Manning Award-winning artist Dan Mora (Klaus, Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers), along with series creator and story consultant Joss Whedon (the visionary writer/director behind Firefly, Marvel’s The Avengers, and more), reimagine the groundbreaking pop culture phenomenon from the very beginning.
Buffy The Vampire Slayer premiered on the WB Network on March 10th, 1997. The Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated series, which ran for seven seasons from 1997-2003, stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as “Buffy Summers.” Chosen to battle vampires, demons and other forces of darkness, Buffy is aided by a Watcher who guides and teaches her as she surrounds herself with a circle of friends called the “Scooby Gang.”
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #2 features a main cover by acclaimed Mondo illustrator Matthew Taylor, along with covers by Kevin Wada (She-Hulk), Ryan Inzana (Ichiro), and Audrey Mok (Archie).
“We’re excited to have Celia join us for a variant cover for the second issue of Jordie and Dan’s incredible vision for Buffy and the gang, and to bring her unique point of view to the story,” said Jeanine Schaefer, Executive Editor, BOOM! Studios. “We’re treating each issue of this series like an event – so if you think Spike and Drusilla are the end of our big reveals, just wait till you get to the last page.”
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ eponymous imprint, home to a world-class group of licensed comic book series and ambitious original series, including Joss Whedon’s Firefly, Lev Grossman’s The Magicians, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, Planet of the Apes, Abbott, Mech Cadet Yu, Grass Kings, and Klaus.
Print copies of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #2 will be available for sale on February 13th, 2019 exclusively at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Review- October Funko/Amazon Star Wars Smuggler’s Bounty
Recently, Funko made the decision to end their subscription boxes and offer them through various retailers. Hot Topic is the destination for fans of the Disney Treasures box. Marvel Collector Corps and Star Wars Smuggler’s Bounty subscribers have to head over to Amazon to get their fix. And as far as DC’s Legion of Collectors, we still don’t know which retailer that box is going to be offered up at.
The Smuggler’s Bounty Boxes have been largely hit or miss for me, so I canceled my subscription long before it went to Amazon. But when Funko started advertising the Cloud City box my interest was piqued. Then, when they sent out an email with a spoiler pic of Harrison Ford in carbonite I HAD to order it. I was hoping we’d get a movie moment with Chewie, Leia, and Han in carbonite. What we got was equally as cool.
I had a couple of issues with this month’s box. To start, the boxes have been a bit disappointing since they hit Amazon. I ordered the first two MCC boxes and they seemed...chintzier. The shipping boxes weren’t as nice as the older ones and the items inside seemed less thoughtful than they used to be. The item selection just feels...lazy. Not only that, but the POP! in this box fit so tightly in the box that I had to literally tear it apart to get it out. We got three items; a POP! Movie Moment, a keychain, and a Mystery Mini figure. I’m definitely missing the patch and pin and wearable that used to come in the box.
The first item in the box was an Billy Dee Williams Lando Calrissian key chain. I love the character of Lando, but the keychain wasn’t very exciting. Second was the Mystery Mini figure, which is Chewbacca carrying C-3P0. I have to admit, this one is pretty cool even though I’d have preferred a patch and pin.
The last item in the box was the ‘Boba gets his Bounty’ Movie Moment. I’m a huge Boba Fett fan, so this one was awesome. I wasn’t initially a fan of the Movie Moment line, but since I got a couple as gifts, they’ve grown on me. It’s awesome finally getting a Han in carbonite POP! I’ve been waiting for this one for a long time. This is, unfortunately, the only item that made this box worth getting. I am definitely going to be suspending my Smuggler’s Bounty subscription and renewing on a theme by theme basis.
The POP! Movie Moment is what made the box for me. Unfortunately, the box overall was a bit disappointing. It feels like Funko has gotten a little lazy in putting them together. I ended up cancelling my subscription until I learn the next boxes' theme and decide whether or not to re-up.
Inside this month's box:
-POP! Movie Moment: 'Boba Gets His Bounty'
-Lando Keychain
-Chewbacca/C-3P0 Mystery Mini

American Gothic Press and Echo Lake Entertainment Present "Nice"
The increasingly direct link from comic book to film property has prompted at least one studio to go straight to comic books with their best new story. Echo Lake Entertainment has partnered with American Gothic Press for its new assassin mystery NICE.
Welcome to NICE. We’ve got assassins, bored hipsters, deranged detectives, and the electric glow of an LA smog sunset. The transport is a ’69 GTO and the drinks are upright Manhattans, with a cherry. Blood and death are just part of a normal day, man.
Jose and Kevin, a couple of bar-hopping hipster dudes, are running errands for a massive crime organization in Los Angeles, and they’re a little bit in over their heads. It’s clear they’re not quite at the top of their game when they drive a masked man to his hit point and take off for drinks after five minutes of waiting.
Meanwhile, said masked man’s attempt at a quick break in and snuff job has gone to hell because the target, Detective Hanin, is a slightly psychopathic, drug-addicted ball-buster who’s set a trap. Much blood later, the masked man is a pulpy corpse, and Hanin has one more clue to unlocking the mystery of NICE.
Jose and Kevin are a kind of unlikely assassin-aiding odd couple. Kevin is an obsessive, bizarre, socially awkward sociopath who tries to pick up Grace, one of NICE’s top assassins, at a bar before understanding that she’s basically his boss. Jose is a down to earth musician wannabe who thinks Kevin’s methods are a bit too unconventional when he botches a clean up job by blowing the victim’s head off. But something about the way Kevin works is attractive to NICE, because Grace keeps meeting him for coffee, giving him new assignments.
Precinct blood worker Phil catches on to Hanin when he realizes the crime scene with the masked man doesn’t fit her claim of self-defense. After leaking a piece of information that has Hanin slamming him against a bathroom wall in rage, Phil decides to join her in an off-duty crusade to try to find the guys who sent the masked man and what organization they work for.
Hanin is hiding some serious secrets, and not even witnessing people get their heads blown off point blank is going to set her off course. She’s a bit of a beast, hardly human anymore, would rather pass out in an impounded car than do anything the old fashioned way. But nobody escapes NICE – not cops, not innocent old men who lose their heads for talking too much, and certainly not Jose and Kevin, who are not going to make it through their initiation unscathed.
