BOOM! Studios Turns 10! The Publisher Kicks Off Celebrating 10 Years in 2015 with a Yearlong Cover Strategy to Reward Retailers and Fans

In 2015, BOOM! Studios turns 10 years old, and to celebrate this milestone anniversary, the award-winning publisher is excited to announce a yearlong cover strategy starting in January designed to spotlight all of its new launches and reward many lucky retailers and fans. Every launching issue in 2015 will include a uniquely designed “10 Years” incentive variant cover featuring work by one of 16 of the industry’s best cover artists. Each artist (or artist team) will provide all the covers to all of the newest titles coming out from BOOM! or one of its imprints (KaBOOM!, Archaia, and BOOM! Box), with the roster rotating each quarter. The special “10 Years” covers will be retailer incentives available to order for retailers for every 10 copies they order of the title’s main cover.

For the first quarter of 2015 (January-March), the artists are:
•All launching BOOM! Studios titles: Trevor Hairsine (Captain America, Eternal Warrior)
•All launching KaBOOM! titles: Joe Quinones (Harley Quinn, Big Trouble in Little China)
•All launching Archaia titles: Ramón Pérez (Amazing Spider-Man, Jim Henson’s Tale of Sand)
•All launching BOOM! Box titles: Shelli Paroline & Braden Lamb (Adventure Time, The Midas Flesh)

Cover artists for the remaining quarters of 2015 will be announced at a later date.

In January, new launching titles to receive the “10 Years” Cover treatment include:
•Burning Fields #1 (BOOM! Studios)
•Adventure Time: Marceline Gone Adrift #1 (KaBOOM!)
•Feathers #1 (Archaia)
•Munchkin #1 (BOOM! Box)

The cover images will be revealed closer to each title’s order deadline.

In addition, BOOM! will select one launching title each month and slip one, rare exclusive cover intermixed into every 100 copies of the main cover printed. Dubbed the Jackpot Variant, these special covers will show up randomly at any comic shop that orders at least one copy of the title. For January, that title is Munchkin #1, a new ongoing series from BOOM! Box based on the hit adventure card game. The Jackpot Variant cover for Munchkin #1 is illustrated by Evan Palmer (Cooking with Food).

Finally, should any of its new titles in 2015 launch with a final combined initial order of over 10,000 copies, BOOM! will unlock an additional 1-in-10 intermixed special variant that will ship with the main cover.

To help mark its 10th anniversary, BOOM! will include a new “10 Years” trade dress logo that will be featured on the covers of all its single-issue releases in 2015.

“We’re very proud to reach our 10th anniversary here at BOOM! Studios, so to celebrate, we wanted to make sure we included the people that helped us get where we are today: comics retailers and fans,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “This yearlong program brings in some of the best artists in the industry and is designed to celebrate this milestone with all of our supporters. I can speak for our entire team when I say we’re looking forward to the next 10 years of publishing great comics!”

McFarlane Toys' 'The Walking Dead' Buliding Sets Collectible figures.

The Toys R Us exclusive figures featuring 'The Walking Dead' are just beginning to hit shelves. The figures, from McFarlane Toys, come in "blind bag" packaging. This means you will get a random figure in each package. The figures are part of a brick building line featuring iconic scenes and environments from the TV show. I realized after opening mine, that on the upper-right hand corner of each package it is marked with either an "W" or an "H" to let you know that there is either a Walker or a Human inside.

I picked up three random figures in my local Toys R Us the other day. The figures inside the packages were Daryl, The Governor, and Herd Walker Male 1. They need to be put together piece by piece, which is relatively easy and they also come with a clear stand. The only issue I had was with the Herd Walker, whose head doesn't quite fit on the torso. The figures are small, but extremely detailed for their size. They're well-sculpted and the painting is pretty darn good. They retail for $3.99, which is a bit pricey for not being able to see which figure you're receiving. I suppose it's not bad if you're building an army of walkers, but for the casual consumer that wants a certain figure, you're kind of out of luck.

The series one figures include:

- Michonne
- Daryl Dixon
- The Governor
- Carl Grimes
- Sophia Walker
- Herd Walker Female 1
- Herd Walker Male 1
- Michonne's Pet Walker 1

Some assembly required
The Governor, Herd Walker Male 1, and Daryl Dixon
The Governor next to a (bootleg) Black Widow Lego minifigure
Impressive detail on all of the figures

Titan Comics Announces Doctor Who Humor Strips

Titan Comics is proud to announce the creators of Dungeon Fun will join Rachael Smith, Emma Price  and Marc Ellerby in the line-up of stellar talent producing humor strips for Titan’s Doctor Who comics!

Debuting with Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor #2, Colin Bell and Neil Slorance produce single page humor strips focusing on The Twelfth Doctor and Clara’s further adventures in space and time.

For Bell and Slorance, whose all-ages comic DUNGEON FUN won all 4 Scottish Independent Comic Book Awards in July, this is a dream assignment.

Bell says, “To be the men who put the words in the mouth of The Man Who Stops The Monsters is an incredible honor for us both!

“We're concerned with what happens in the smaller moments between crises, when the galaxy's not being saved. Who takes the bins out? Where do they go for lunch? Neil and I hope to answer these questions; and as always, the answers await us... in time! “

Bell & Slorance join the incredible line-up of back-up creators Titan have assembled, along with Rachael Smith and Emma Price on Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor, and Marc Ellerby on Doctor Who: The Eleventh Doctor, with more artists to be announced!

“As someone who loved Matt Smith's time as the Doctor, I'm over the moon to be involved with the brand new comics,” says Marc Ellerby. “I'm donning my fez and raggedy blazer to help power through the drawings!”

“I’m so excited to be able to work on these strips,” Rachael Smith adds. “I'm having so much fun writing for the characters!”

Emma Price says, “It’s thrilling being able to support such a diverse and accomplished range of creators in a new era of comics adventures with the Doctor!”

“It’s a delight to showcase the work of some immensely talented indie creators through the Doctor Who comics,” says Doctor Who editor Andrew James. “Hopefully we’re introducing our readers to a whole universe of new writers and artists, as well as offering some charming and hilarious shorts with these beloved characters.”

Doctor Who: The Twelfth Doctor #2 is on sale in comic stores globally and via comiXology from November 19.

Crack the Code with Justin Jordan's First Original Series with BOOM! Studios, 'Deep State'

Deep State #1 Main Cover by Matt Taylor

Deep State #1 Retailer Incentive Cover by Artyom Trakhanov

Everyone loves a good conspiracy theory. Whether you want to believe it or debunk it, stories of the faked moon landing, government-sanctioned assassinations, and brainwashing have been around for generations. This November, award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios asks: What if those conspiracy theories were planted to cover up an even darker truth? Discover the conspiracy behind the conspiracies with Deep State, a new ongoing series that kicks off the first of three original series from one of the emerging voices behind hard-hitting and intelligent stories, Justin Jordan (Spread, The Strange Talent of Luther Strode), and talented artist Ariela Kristantina (Death of Wolverine).

“Justin is a writer we’ve been dying to work with,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “His stories are visceral, smart, and they just bleed cool. With Deep State, Justin is setting up a little patch of land for himself at BOOM! and we’re excited to have him. Ariela Kristantina is teaming up with Justin and turning in some spectacular artwork on this series—she’s definitely an artist on the rise. Get ready for them to introduce you to John Harrow in November.”

In Deep State, John Harrow doesn’t exist, and his job is to make sure that other things don’t exist, too. At any given time, the government is running dozens of black book operations, experiments that aren’t on any official record and are never acknowledged to exist. Some of these are innocuous. Some of them are monstrous beyond reason. And most of the time, they go as expected and the public is never the wiser. Most of the time. John Harrow’s job is to handle them when things go wrong, and do anything to make sure the government’s secrets stay just that—secret. If you’re interested in conspiracy theory stories from comics like Planetary and Sleeper to films like Enemy of the State and Three Days of the Condor, you’ll be gripped by Deep State!

Deep State #1 arrives in comic book shops on November 12th with a main cover by Mondo print illustrator Matt Taylor and a retailer incentive cover by Artyom Trakhanov (Undertow), with a cover price of $3.99.
