Review: Alex and Me

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment provided me with a free copy of the DVD I reviewed in this Blog Post. The opinions I share are my own.

Alex and Me, out now from Warner Home Video, is a fun family film starring Siena Agudong and soccer star Alex Morgan. Agudong (Star Falls) stars as Reagan, who wants to one day be as good as her hero, soccer star Alex Morgan. Through an accidental fall, Reagan hits her head, and when she comes to she finds that she can see and hear her hero who has literally walked out of her poster and into her bedroom. From there, Alex motivates Reagan to work hard in order to become the player that she wants to be.

Even though Reagan has Alex as a teacher and motivator, she also longs for the support of her parents. They are, unfortunately, invested wholly in her brother, who is a football superstar being looked at by college recruiters. Eventually, her parents realize that they’ve been neglecting Reagan and they start to give her the support she needs. It was great to see that the main character and her family were a diverse cast. We don’t often get this in films, let alone in a film about girls in sports.

There’s something for everyone in this film. One strong message for parents is that taking an active interest your kids’ passions will help build more confidence and stronger bonds. Ultimately, Alex and Me can be a bit predictable, but that is by no means a detriment to the film. In fact, the positive ending is something I found refreshing.

Having friends who have daughters that are involved in dance, BMX, and other sports, I found this to be a great flick for an under served audience. In fact, I will be letting some of them watch my copy and recommending it to those I can. Alex and Me is out now on Blu-ray/DVD and digital.
