Trek Nation and White Room: 02B3 Make International Debuts at SCI-FI-LONDON

UK fans get double feature when Roddenberry Entertainment films land in England .

Roddenberry Entertainment, the successor of the science fiction pioneer that brought television and film audiences Star Trek, announced today that its Saturn Award-nominated film Trek Nation will make its much anticipated international debut on May 7 at the 11th Annual Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film in London's Apollo Piccadilly Circus at 4:55 p.m. local time. The film will appear as part of a Roddenberry Entertainment double feature along with the company's groundbreaking 360-degree film White Room: 02B3.

Trek Nation made its US debut in November 2011 on SCIENCE Channel to acclaimed reviews of Rod Roddenberry's tribute to his father, Gene Roddenberry, including a nomination from the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films for a 2012 Saturn Award in the "Best Television Presentation (10 Episodes or Less)" category. Through exclusive footage and interviews with devoted fans, including George Lucas, J.J. Abrams, Seth MacFarlane and many notable Star Trek alumni, Trek Nation chronicled a son's journey to discover his father and the creation that helped define modern-day science fiction.

"By exploring my father through a variety of untapped touchstones, we were able to introduce the world to a Gene Roddenberry it's never met before. Through this process of humanization, Trek Nation reminds us that none of us are perfect but that within our imperfections lays the potential for greatness," said Executive Producer Rod Roddenberry.

While it will be the first time a European audience is given the opportunity to view the documentary in its entirety, Sci-Fi-London will also play host to the world premier of Roddenberry Entertainment's new film White Room: 02B3. Shot with the world's most advanced high-definition 360-degree camera, White Room:02B3 stars Breckin Meyer, Tamlyn Tomita, David Blue and Rachel True, as well as Internet icons Tony Janning and Milynn Sarley. The film will debut during the Blink of an Eye program on Saturday, May 5 at 4:55 p.m. local time before it's screened with Trek Nation on May 7.

Boldly going where no camera has gone before, Roddenberry Entertainment used cutting edge 360-degree SA9 camera technology to create an engaging, interactive audience experience. Sitting in the middle of the room, the camera captures 360-degrees outward in high-definition panoramic video with no gaps or distortion during filming.

While White Room: 02B3 is premiering at film festivals, Roddenberry will also launch it as an immersive cinematic trailblazer in 360-degree dome theaters around the country and as an interactive experience online. A click-and-drag function will simulate the dome experience.

"In addition to quality science fiction, Roddenberry is known for taking strides into new technologies and pushing entertainment boundaries. With White Room: 02B3 we are certainly at the birth of a new kind of filmmaking," said Trevor Roth, chief operating officer and head of development at Roddenberry Entertainment.

Heroes for Heroes: The Badass Celebrity Smackdown

“The next best thing to being a sci-fi or action hero has to be shooting a sci-fi or action hero with a gun. Or maybe being shot by one,” says John Simons, founder and Chairman of Comicpalooza, the Texas International Comic Con. At least that’s the premise that led to the Badass Celebrity Smackdown, in which fans attending Comicpalooza May 25 - 27 will get their chance to pit themselves against stars of some of the biggest sci-fi and action franchises in Hollywood while helping US veterans at the same time.

Heroes for Heroes: The Badass Celebrity Smackdown is a charity event held at Comicpalooza that benefits Impact a Hero, a non-profit organization that provides emotional and financial support to severely wounded veterans from post 911 conflicts. In addition to the heroes event, there will be a villain event as well. Celebrities participating in the charity events are:

Michael Biehn (Terminator, Aliens)

Claudia Christian (Babylon 5)

David Della Rocco (Boondock Saints)

Sean Patrick Flanery (Boondock Saints)

Richard Hatch (Battlestar Galactica)

Christopher Judge (Stargate SG-1)

Richard LeParmentier (Star Wars)

Rachel Lutrell (Stargate Atlantis)

Kevin Sorbo (Hercules, Andromeda)

In the heroes event, fans will have the chance to shoot or be shot by their favorite heroes in a once-in-a-lifetime game of laser tag. There will be two heroes games of laser tag. To qualify for one of the fan teams, a fan may either make a $300 donation to Impact a Hero to reserve one of the fixed spots, or win one of several open spots that will be raffled off at the Impact a Hero booth from among all the fans making donations over the convention weekend.

Richard LeParmentier will be featured in the villains event where he will lead a team of the 501st Stormtroopers against fans. There will be one villain game on Friday and one on Saturday, while the heroes games will both take place on Sunday, May 27. Fans will be able to register for the villain game on site immediately before it takes place. Registration for the Heroes event will be on the Comicpalooza website.

Tiger & Bunny Movie Trailer Hits Interwebs

The Tiger & Bunny trailer is here! The upcoming film, based on the hit series, will be hitting screens in Japan later this year. It's the first of two planned movies. The first is said to be a partial retelling of the series with some more of Kotetsu's (Wild Tiger) past as well as an "unknown" side of Barnaby (Bunny). Check out the official site HERE

The series has yet to make its official debut here in the U.S. but should be dropping sometime this year as it already has a distributor. It has been a huge success and hopefully as soon as it's released here its popularity will grow so I can stop spending ridiculous amounts of money importing its merchandise.

The Avengers Spotted at Target

To coincide with the release of The Avengers film, Target has set up some pretty spiffy-looking displays. As you can see here, they are heavily promoting the upcoming film with some awesome looking signing. Not pictured are Thor and Captain America signs that are on an endcap and down the aisle. They also have some cool looking Hulk tracks leading down the aisle. Check out your local Target where you can pick up the full line of Avengers movie tie-in merchandise and also DVD's and Blu-ray's of your favorite Marvel characters.

Jaws Sinking Its Teeth Into Blu-ray On August 14th

Universal City, California, April 10, 2012:  JAWS – the landmark motion picture that still makes audiences afraid to go in the water – comes to Blu-rayTM for the first time ever on August 14th, 2012. Featuring an all-new, digitally remastered and fully restored picture, as well as 7.1 surround sound, the JAWS Blu-rayTM Combo Pack with DVD, Digital Copy and UltraVioletTM gives fans the ultimate way to watch the breathtaking and terrifying action-thriller.

One of the most influential motion pictures of all time and nominated for a Best Picture Academy Award®, JAWS stars Oscar® winner Richard Dreyfuss and Oscar® nominees Roy Scheider and Robert Shaw.  Produced by legendary filmmakers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown, the film earned an Oscar® for composer John Williams’ instantly recognizable minimalist score, as well as Oscars® for Best Editing and Best Sound. When it was first released in 1975, JAWS smashed box-office records and became the highest-grossing film of its era, earning Spielberg a reputation as a Hollywood visionary.  Today, it remains one of the highest-grossing films in motion-picture history and is largely considered the film that launched the summer blockbuster.

JAWS is one of 13 classic Universal films to be digitally remastered and fully restored from 35mm original film elements as part of Universal’s ongoing 100th Anniversary celebration. The JAWS restoration began with researching and evaluating the existing film elements to determine the best means to restore the film. Over the course of several months, skilled technicians at Universal Studios Digital Services meticulously balanced color, removed dirt and scratches, and repaired any damage to the film elements shot by shot and frame by frame. Following the picture restoration, Universal Studios Sound team up-mixed the iconic JAWS soundtrack to DTS-HD Master 7.1, optimizing the sound on the Blu-rayTM for the latest home theater technology. The entire restoration process was conducted in conjunction with Steven Spielberg and Amblin Entertainment’s post-production team to ensure the integrity of Spielberg’s original vision remained intact.

JAWS holds a unique place, not just in Universal Pictures’ history, but in global pop culture,” said Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment. “It is only fitting that this phenomenal film should be given the extensive restoration needed to ensure that long-time fans as well as newcomers can enjoy this unforgettable cinematic achievement for generations to come.”

DISNEY EPIC MICKEY PAINTS ITS WAY TO THE NINTENDO 3DS

Disney Interactive Media Group has announced the development of “Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion,” the first Nintendo 3DS title in the “Disney Epic Mickey” franchise. The title features an interactive combination of painting, dual screen integration and 3D transformation capabilities designed to give players the unique ability to create objects and even characters they can place in the world of Wasteland.

In “Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion,” Reality is What You Paint of It.  The game offers a special drawing and painting function that allows players to create rough versions of objects that magically transform into classic Disney-style 2D illustrations.  Utilizing the game’s unparalleled dual screen integration, players then move their creations to the top screen where they are further transformed into full-color, fully-rendered 3D visuals.

Paying tribute to the classic Sega Genesis title “Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse,” “Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion” focuses on the fabled Castle of Illusion, which has fallen into Wasteland, an alternate world filled with 80 years of forgotten Disney characters and theme park attractions – and now forgotten video games.  The evil witch Mizrabel, villainess from the classic “Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse,” finds herself an unwilling inhabitant of Wasteland, and unleashes a plot to escape using the Castle of Illusion to imprison and drain the cartoon essence from currently famous Toons.  Players will take on the role of Mickey Mouse as he utilizes his magical brush to wield paint and thinner to confront Mizrabel and save the Toons.

“The original ‘Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse’ changed the face of video gaming by allowing players to play as Mickey Mouse in a side-scrolling adventure full of dynamic environments,” said Warren Spector, vice president and creative director, Junction Point. “We’re honored to be able to pay tribute to this classic video game by creating a title that  truly takes advantage of the unique capabilities of the Nintendo 3DS, putting the magic of Disney and the historic Castle of Illusion in the palm of your hands.”

“Disney Epic Mickey: Power of Illusion” is being created by critically acclaimed DS developer DreamRift, in collaboration with Disney Interactive’s Junction Point. The game is slated for a fall 2012 release on the Nintendo 3DS. For more information, go to www.disney.com/disneyepicmickey, or check out this month’s issue of “Nintendo Power” magazine which features an exclusive cover story on the upcoming game.

In the comedy American Reunion, all the American Pie characters we met a little more than a decade ago return to East Great Falls for their high-school reunion. In one long-overdue weekend, they will discover what has changed, who hasn’t and that time and distance can’t break the bonds of friendship.

It was summer 1999 when four small-town Michigan boys began a quest to lose their virginity. In the years that have passed, Jim and Michelle married while Kevin and Vicky said goodbye. Oz and Heather grew apart, but Finch still longs for Stifler’s mom. Now these lifelong friends have come home as adults to reminisce about—and get inspired by—the hormonal teens who launched a comedy legend.

SCI-FI-LONDON 2012 – 7 DAYS IN MAY!

The UK’s leading science fiction and fantastic film festival, SCI-FI-LONDON (The London International Festival of Science Fiction and Fantastic Film), will host film screenings, special events, workshops and celebrations during its 7 day festival across the capital in 2012.
The festival runs Tuesday 1 – Monday 7 May, 2012 and in this year of Olympic and Royal celebration, SCI-FI-LONDON is firmly in carnival mode. In addition to the core film programme, highlights include:
·         30TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION FOR THE ZX SPECTRUM
So many of today’s creative, technical, and cultural talent are, in one way or another, indebted to the little machine that plugged into the living room telly. We’re celebrating the Spectrum’s anniversary in HORIZONS, at the BFI: a rich blend of fun, memories, and future-gazing. Play some of your favourite games (you’re welcome to bring your Kempston interface and Quickshot II). We’ll have a variety of speakers and performers over the two days, practical experiments in programming and an extra special look to the future, with the new RASPBERRY PI on-hand... will this create a new generation of programmers?

·       GENRE FILMMAKING IN THE UK at BAFTA
Is there a market for science fiction filmmaking in the UK?
A day of talks at BAFTA HQ on the state of Sci-fi filmmaking in the UK.
For UK based filmmakers the average production spend in Britain is £1.2m and falling. With that in mind, it’s no wonder UK science fiction is relatively scarce. Yet, where there is a will, there is certainly a way. Digital tools have really brought costs down, and films like MOON, MONSTERS, EXAM and the recent 2012 SXSW low budget hit EXTRACTED (UK Premiere on 2 May at SFL), have shown us that good story and clever use of resources determine the success of a film, not necessarily budgets. In this event we’ll quiz key writers, directors, designers, producers and distributors on the essential creative and business questions around getting a good mid-to-low budget sci-fi film off the ground.

·         BORIS KARLOFF, MONSTER!
The screen legend Boris Karloff was born 125 years ago and to celebrate one of cinema’s most iconic actors, we present a collection of his finest performances, talks and a documentary charting his unique career. Supported by the Boris Karloff Charitable Foundation.
  • 48 HOUR FILM CHALLENGE
With Joe Dante and Alison Owen on the jury, our 2012 challenge has a first prize of a feature development deal with Vertigo Films. Teams receive a title, a line of dialogue to include, and a list of props to feature. Participants then have 2 days to complete a 5min short film. Easy! Registration at www.sci-fi-london.com. The challenge takes place 14–16 April, 2012 and is free to enter.   #sfl48hr
·         THE SCI-FI-LONDON COSTUME PARADE ALONG THE SOUTHBANK
From Victoria Embankment Gardens, across the Thames and on to the BFI on Sunday 29 April 2012, featuring Stormtroopers, zombies, superheroes and more.
All genres, all costumes, all-comers welcome to this free event! We even have our own Olympic torch-carrying Zombie pacesetters!
Festival Director, Louis Savy says:
London is awash with cultural feasts this year and we are more than happy to be contributing with our selection of exciting, challenging and entertaining international film – with seven world premieres!
I am equally excited to be able to dust off my old Spectrum ZX and get my hands on the new Raspberry PI at our computing event at the BFI. There’ll be something for everyone, whether sci-fi convert or sceptic.
Full details will be available soon and on www.sci-fi-london.com.
