All-New Rocko’s Modern Life Comic Book Series Launches at BOOM! Studios

BOOM! Studios and Nickelodeon are excited to announce ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE, a new ongoing comic book series based on the popular animated show about everyone’s favorite wallaby! Writer Ryan Ferrier (Regular Show, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers) and artist Ian McGinty (Adventure Time, Bravest Warriors) team to launch the first comic book in the series in December 2017. Each issue will also feature bonus short stories by different illustrators, including Tony Millionaire (Sock Monkey), KC Green (Invader Zim), and David DeGrand (SpongeBob Comics).

Rocko, Spunky, Heffer, Filburt, the Bigheads, and the entire cast of O-Town are back, but all is not well. The town is facing a job shortage and Rocko is hit hard. With unemployment and potential homelessness on the horizon, Rocko’s problems are just beginning. But with help from his best friends Heffer and Filbert and his faithful dog Spunky, Rocko is (mostly) ready to take on the world (maybe).

“ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE was one of the standout series for me growing up, as it really struck a chord with me in how similar it was to my own sensibilities and sense of humor, even at that younger age,” says series writer Ferrier. “Working on this series, especially knowing how incredible Ian is going to make it, has made me an even bigger fan.”

Series artist Ian McGinty adds, "Fans are gonna be pretty blasted away by how well the new comic blends ’90s nostalgia with modern sentiment, and a Mystery Science Theater 3000-esque vibe that I find really, really cool.”

ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE marks the second series in the partnership between BOOM! Studios and Nickelodeon through BOOM Studios’ award-winning, all-ages imprint, KaBOOM!. The first series of this partnership debuts October 18 with Rugrats #1, from writer Box Brown (AndrĂ© the Giant: Life and Legend) and artist Lisa DuBois (Adventure Time).

“Working with Nickelodeon on Rugrats and now ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE has been amazing,” says Editor Whitney Leopard. “We’ve been a fan of their shows for years and to be able to work with them on bringing these characters to life in comics is a dream come true.”

ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE #1 features a main cover by Jorge Monlongo (Adventure Time Comics), a “look-and-find” cover by Bachan (Bill & Ted Save the Universe), and a variant cover by Nick Pitarra (The Manhattan Projects). BOOM! Studios will also be offering a blank Sketch Cover for this launch.    Print copies of ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE #1 will be available for sale in December at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or through the BOOM! Studios webstore. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers, including comiXology, iBooks, Google Play,  and the BOOM! Studios app.

ROCKO’S MODERN LIFE is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed KaBOOM! imprint, publisher of world-class licensed series such as Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, Peanuts, and Garfield, along with original series like Brave Chef Brianna by Sam Sykes and Selina Espiritu, and The Deep by Tom Taylor and James Brouwer.

Acclaimed Series Misfit City Extended for Second Story Arc

The critically acclaimed MISFIT CITY, from screenwriter Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith (Legally Blonde, 10 Things I Hate About You), co-writer Kurt Lustgarten, and artist Naomi Franquiz, kicks off its climactic second story arc in September as the hunt for Black Mary’s treasure reaches a dramatic conclusion, BOOM! Studios announced today. With critical acclaim from all corners, including Entertainment Weekly’s “Must List,” MISFIT CITY is the newest smash hit from the innovative BOOM! Box imprint of BOOM! Studios.

MISFIT CITY is the story of Wilder and her friends, whose hometown is where they filmed that cult kids’ adventure movie in the ’80s. Nothing ever happens there, until one day they come upon a centuries-old treasure map drawn by the infamous pirate Black Mary, launching a life-imitates-art adventure in the town they all dreamed of escaping.

“After discovering a secret entrance to the caves at Bootlegger’s Bluff and finding Captain Denby still alive, the next story arc of MISFIT CITY will follow Wilder, Macy, Dot, and Karma as they continue to hunt for Black Mary's treasure,” says Smith. “Their friendship will be tested as romantic entanglements threaten to break the group apart and the stakes are ratcheted up on their adventure. Expect more crackling banter and a hoard of pirate booty... and surprisingly agile assists from Pippin, the dog with no sense of smell.”

“Fans of the series have been incredible with their support and we've had so much fun getting to meet them at signings, conventions, and on Twitter,” says Lustgarten. “Apart from connecting with so many people, the whole experience has been bonding for us as well. It’s our first comic, and our first produced ‘credit’ together, so it’s a true labor of love. This is our baby, so we’re glad it went to school and made friends.”

Print copies of MISFIT CITY #5, which kicks off the second story arc, will be available for sale at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Studios webstore starting September 20. Digital copies can be purchased from content providers like comiXology, iBooks, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Unboxing August's Loot Crate: Kingdom

August's Loot Crate theme, Kingdom, brings together some
of our favorites. Adventure Time, Lord of the Rings, and The Legend of Zelda are all featured in the crate. With only three franchises in the spotlight, I think it was a bit of a missed opportunity to exclude Game of Thrones; probably one of the biggest shows out right now. Despite that, this was actually a pretty solid box.

First up was the monthly Loot Crate button. This past month's was an original design by LC and was a "Kingdom Crest Pin." It featured the Loot Crate logo, battle axes, and what looks to be a boar's head.

Next we got two items from Lord of the Rings. The first was an exclusive 8x10 LOTR art print from artist Matt Ferguson and Bottleneck Gallery. The print features Merry and Pippin standing atop Treebeard as they approach the tower of Isengard. The picture below does not do this print justice; this is an awesome piece that deserves to be framed.

The second LOTR item was an exclusive color changing glass. Based on the "One Ring," this gold colored glass features the Tengwar Elvish runes. When filled with cold liquid, the runes turn red. I have to admit that when I opened the crate and saw the box, I was kind of disappointed, thinking, "Meh, a glass." But once I opened it, I was thoroughly impressed as this is one awesome drinking glass.

The shirt included in August's crate was nothing short of epic! Fans of the classic NES game, The Legend of Zelda were treated to an exclusive tee featuring the tireless hero, Link, in 8-bit map form. This tee celebrates over 30 years of Zelda, Link, and Hyrule all in one clever design!

The final item in the box comes from one of my favorite franchises, Adventure Time. Looters received an amazing AT "Nice King" and Gunter figure. The figure features the Ice King, sitting upon his throne with Gunter and his penguin guards.

Inside August's crate:

- Kingdom Crest Pin (Loot Crate)
- LOTR Art Print (Bottleneck Gallery)
- LOTR Color Changing Glass (Loot Crate)
- Legend of Zelda 8-bit Tee (Loot Crate)
- "Nice King" and Gunter Figure (Loot Crate)

Unboxing July's Loot Crate: Animation

This unboxing is coming a whole month later than it should. Unfortunately it's because Loot Crate apparently had some issues with their t-shirts, which caused a huge delay. That being said, this month's crate was worth the wait. The theme, which was animation, brought together some of our favorite cartoons!

First up was a Slurm coozie from Futurama. To be honest, it's not a practical item for me personally, but it was still pretty cool and will be going to a good home.

The t-shirt this month (or last month) was based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon. This. Shirt. Is. Awesome. It's got the Turtles rolling in their van in a neon green and a huge turtle shell behind it.

There were not one, but TWO Bob's Burgers items in the crate. The first was a set of cards full of unique burger recipes! This is definitely getting some use as BBQ's are a regular event here at Geek Hash HQ. The second item was a Burger Gene pin. This is probably the best pin Loot Crate has ever put out.

Finally, the BEST item in the box was an exclusive figure from Rick and Morty. Based on the episode "The Ricks Must Be Crazy," this Morty figure is definitely NSFW. The figure "replicates Rick's arrival and greeting to the denizens of the microverse."

Inside July's Loot Crate:

- Burger Gene Pin (Loot Crate)

- Bob's Burgers Recipe Cards (Penguin Random House)

- TMNT Turtle Van Shirt (Nickelodeon)

- Futurama Slurm Koozies 2-pack (A Crowded Coop)

- Rick and Morty Figure (Loot Crate)

Giveaway: 9/11 Film Charlie Sheen Autographed Poster and Gift Pack

9/11 opens in theaters on September 8 and features an all star cast including Luis Guzman (The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3), Gina Gershon (Showgirls), Wood Harris (Justified), Jacqueline Bisset (Dancing on the Edge (BBC), Welcome to New York), Olga Fonda (The Vampire Diaries) and Bruce Davison (X-Men).

In the World Trade Center, a billionaire sits in his attorney's office awaiting a divorce hearing against his wife. In a west side apartment, a bike messenger kisses his 5-year old daughter and sings her "Happy Birthday" before leaving for work. A maintenance man gets dispatched to help a tenant with his lock. In an upper east side apartment, a young model musters the courage to break up with her sugar daddy. As random as random can be, these individuals step into a crowded World Trade Center elevator.

Wrapped up in their own world, they all ride silently hearing only the sound of the elevator giving notice of each floor. When the elevator stops on the 34th floor, it empties leaving only these five behind. Moments later ... their world changes as the collision of a jet into the North Tower incapacitates the elevator.

With no understanding of what has happened and is happening around them, these fives are forced to band together and fight against all odds to escape from the impending horrific collapse. During these critical minutes, a story of courage, faith, and the will to live unfolds.

My memories of September 11th, 2001 are amongst the most vivid I have. I can remember just about everything about that day. I remember where I was when I found out, and I remember going home and watching the news non-stop for hours. I'll never forget the shock and confusion I had over watching the horrible images that kept replaying on the news.

That day I had been working overnight at my job when we heard the emergency newscast over the radio. The reports of not one, but two planes hitting the towers seemed unfathomable. My co-workers and I listened intently and were confused about how it possibly could have happened. When news started to break that it was an suspected act of terrorism, things became even more confusing; how and why could anyone do this was the question that kept running through my head.

When I returned home from work I immediately turned on my television to get more information. I was glued to the screen for hours, watching the same clips over and over. The scenes of people jumping from the buildings, trying to escape is something you can never forget.

Later that night was to be my first night of class at the local college. Classes had not been cancelled and I had debated over whether or not I should go. In the end, I went, and to my surprise, every last person showed up. It was a theatre class where we ended up sitting on stage in a circle and talking about the terrorist attacks and how we all felt about it. There were over 30 of us, sharing our feelings and our fears. Some of the people I met that day are amongst the closest people in my life now.
