Newest Funko POP! Figures Added to the Collection

I have been trying to be more conscious of the collectibles I buy. Mostly for that fact that I only have so much space in my home. The one thing that I cannot seem to stop collecting is the Funko POP! line of vinyl figures. There's no shortage of awesome pop culture characters in film/tv/video games, which means that there will be no shortage of new Funko figures any time soon.

The newest additions to my ever-expanding collection is the 25th anniversary glow-in-the-dark Crow (which is a Hot Topic exclusive), The Walking Dead's Hershel Greene, Arkham Asylum Killer Croc, and my favorite POP! figure thus far, Dancing Groot.

I had to pick up the Crow figure as soon as I saw him. I was a huge fan of the film and the soundtrack back in high school. I don't think the disc left my car's CD player my whole Senior year (don't do the math)! Hot Topic was running a BOGO 50% off sale, so I just had to pick up another figure. That one ended up being the Walking Dead's Hershel. With his crutches and missing leg, how could I not pick up this figure! The Killer Croc and Dancing Groot were Toys R Us scores. There was no way I could pass either of them up. The Croc is one bad ass looking figure and Groot is a must-have for anyone's collection. The next ones on the list are Big Hero 6's Baymax and Dragonball Z's Vegeta. At this rate, I'd better get used to ramen noodles...

Croc is a well-detailed and hefty figure

SPOILER ALERT!

Siskel and Ebert's Batman Movie Review

I LOVE film, so Siskel and Ebert were religion for me. Watching their back and forth on 'At the Movies' every week is one of my fondest memories from childhood. It was especially exciting when they reviewed a film that I was looking forward to. If I had already seen the film they were reviewing, I would give my 'thumbs up' or 'thumbs down' alongside them. I watched them review movies for years, so when Gene Siskel, and then Roger Ebert passed, it was almost like losing family members.  Here, a clip of Siskel and Ebert reviewing Tim Burton's Batman:

Peter Pan Live! Coming to NBC December 4

Preparing to sprinkle fairy dust across America, NBC presents "Peter Pan Live!" a bold new television production of the iconic Broadway musical.

Allison Williams ("Girls") stars in the title role and Academy Award winner Christopher Walken stars as the villainous Captain Hook in the timeless classic about a boy who never wants to grow up. Tony Award winner Christian Borle will play both Smee, the dastardly right-hand to Captain Hook, as well as George Darling, the no-nonsense father of the Darling children.

The cast also includes five-time Tony nominee Kelli O'Hara as Mrs. Darling, Taylor Louderman as Wendy Darling, one of the three Darling children, and Alanna Saunders as Tiger Lily, the Native American who rules her "islanders" on Neverland.

Craig Zadan and Neil Meron ("Hairspray," "The Sound of Music Live!") will executive produce. Rob Ashford will serve as director and choreographer and Glenn Weiss will serve as director for live television.

The original Broadway production of "Peter Pan," directed and choreographed by Jerome Robbins and featuring the iconic songs "I'm Flying," "I've Gotta Crow," "I Won't Grow Up," and "Never Never Land," opened on Broadway in 1954. The show had a book by J.M. Barrie and a score by Mark "Moose" Charlap & Carolyn Lee, with additional songs by Jule Styne & Betty Comden and Adolph Green. It starred Mary Martin as Peter and Cyril Ritchard as Captain Hook, both of whom won Tonys for their performances.

While Martin earned a Tony playing Peter on Broadway, other actresses have taken on the role for different Broadway productions. Sandy Duncan was the title character in the 1979 stage version and Cathy Rigby portrayed Peter throughout the 1990s on the Great White Way.

Martin and Ritchard reprised their Broadway roles in a live telecast of the production that aired on NBC in 1955.  The production was so popular that NBC followed it in 1956 with a second live telecast and in 1960 with a videotaped version, both also starring Martin and Ritchard. The 1960 videotaped version was rebroadcast in 1963, 1966 and 1973 and was released on home video in 1990.

Avengers Assemble Hawkeye Figure

I wasn't a fan of the 'Avengers Assemble' line and hadn't picked up any of the figures until I came across this Hawkeye. I found it at a local Ross store for only $4.99, and at that price, how could I pass it up? Being a collector of the Marvel Universe line, I was disappointed that we never got an 'Ultimate' version of Hawkeye. The only version released (not including 'Dark Hawkeye') came in a very hard to find set. The only complaint that I have about this figure is with his bow. It comes with this really weird looking canon-thingy that's supposed to be used to shoot arrows that look like missiles. But that's not a huge problem, because it can easily be removed without damaging the bow. It stands just a bit shorter than a Marvel Universe figure, but it still works!

You can find your own Hawkeye at Amazon.

Hop Into the Driver's Seat with Archaia's New Original Series 'Rocket Salvage'

Rocket Salvage #1 Main Cover by Bachan

Rocket Salvage #1 Retailer Incentive Cover by Yehudi Mercado

Archaia, an award-winning imprint of publisher BOOM! Studios, invites you to pull on your racing gear and rev up your engines this December for the new sci-fi adventure series Rocket Salvage. Creator/writer Yehudi Mercado (Guardians of the Galaxy: Universal Weapon; Pantalones, TX) and artist Bachan (Imagine Agents) give new meaning to the term “space race” with this six-issue limited series about a disgraced former rocket racer named Primo Rocket and his clone kids as they take off across the galaxy to escape the alien gangsters targeting them.

“Yehudi and Bachan are exactly who you want to take you on a crazy racing adventure through space,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “They’re two high-energy storytellers who are great at building new worlds. And Rocket Salvage just happens to be filled with racing-obsessed aliens and rocket ships! But the heart of this story is about a family sticking together against all odds, and that’s what makes it a special project.”

Primo Rocket was the fastest racer in the galaxy until a crash changed his fate and that of his space-station-city home, Rio Rojo. Now, Primo is the owner of a spaceship salvage yard with his two “kids,” clones Beta and Zeta. But everything changes after they become the target of a manhunt leading them on a string of intergalactic adventures. It’s up to this dysfunctional family to stay together and, ultimately, save their home.

Rocket Salvage #1 arrives in comic shops from Archaia on December 17th with a cover price of $3.99

NECA Batman 1989 Video Game Appearance Action Figure

NECA has just released a 7” Batman 1989 Video Game Figure. It’s one in a line of video game figures that NECA has released, including a Predator, Freddy Krueger and RoboCop, among others. I picked this one up from Toys R Us for $24.99. It’s probably one of the best investments I’ve ever made. This figure is just INSANELY cool. I played the Batman video game for hours on end and it takes me all the way back to my middle school days. Back when I could actually sit and play video games pretty much all day. The packaging is even designed to look like the old NES box! This figure is so cool, that I can’t even bring myself to open it. I’m going to have to pick another one up before these disappear just so I can have one to sit on my shelves.

Description via Amazon:

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of both the 1989 film that defined Batman for the modern generation and its video game adaptation, we're proud to announce our first-ever Batman figure in 7" scale! Batman (1989 Video Game Appearance) is the sixth figure in our highly successful line of classic 8-bit video game tributes. Following Michael Keaton's iconic portrayal as Batman in the movie, the side-scrolling game was released in late 1989 for the super popular 8-bit home console and is a true '80s classic. Batman stands 7" tall, with over 25 points of articulation for great poses, plus removable cape, Batarang and Spear Gun accessories. The paint deco takes a stylized approach to reproduce the game's original cel-shaded look. This limited edition figure comes in special window box packaging with opening flap to re-create the look and feel of the classic 1989 video game packaging. One production run only.

BOOM! Box, an Imprint of BOOM! Studios, Announces Its First Collected Trade Paperback with 'The Midas Flesh' Vol. 1

Nearly one year ago, award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios announced their newest imprint BOOM! Box, a home for comics “made for the love of it.” The publisher is now pleased to announce the collected first volume of the imprint’s inaugural series, The Midas Flesh. Created by the longtime creative theam behind the Adventure Time comics, writer Ryan North (Dinosaur Comics) and artists Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb, The Midas Flesh is an edge-of-your-seat, save-the-universe adventure with two butt-kickin’ ladies and a dinosaur in a spacesuit. The first volume collects issues #1-4 of this quirky space epic and features a casewrap covered in striking gold fingerprints.

“When you create an imprint that’s intended to encourage weird, experimental, and eclectic comics, you have to start off with a series that really embodies that mission,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “The Midas Flesh is just that for BOOM! Box. Ryan, Shelli, and Braden have already proven themselves to be some of the best storytellers in comics with their run on Adventure Time, and they’ve outdone themselves with The Midas Flesh. Plus: dinosaur on a spaceship. Hard to beat that.”

About The Midas Flesh: We’ve all heard of the Midas Touch. You know, the Greek myth about the man who did a number on himself by wishing for everything he touched to turn to gold? Well, you haven’t heard everything. Joey and her space crew have decided to return to Earth—a planet completely sectioned off, abandoned, and covered in gold—to find out exactly what happened to this once thriving planet and see if they can use that knowledge against the evil empire that’s tracking them down. As luck would have it, they just landed the most powerful weapon in the universe: some ancient dead guy’s body.

The Midas Flesh Vol. 1 trade paperback arrives in comic shops on December 3rd with a cover price of $14.99. The cover is illustrated by Emily Partridge (Adventure Time).

Warner Bros., DC Entertainment and OTOY Take Fans Inside the Acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series in Industry’s First Commercial Holographic Video Deployment for Virtual Reality and Light Field Displays

Fans can explore the Batcave from the Emmy® Award–winning television series in a fully immersive DC Comics animated universe; OTOY’s ORBX holographic video powers groundbreaking cinematic experience on consumer VR devices

Warner Digital Series, DC Entertainment and visual effects pioneer, OTOY Inc., today announced work on a groundbreaking immersive entertainment experience that will see the Batcave from the acclaimed Emmy® Award–winning Batman: The Animated Series brought to life via interactive holographic video for virtual reality displays. The interactive narrative experience will give fans the opportunity to explore Batman’s world like never before, allowing them to feel what it is like to be inside the show’s stylized universe on devices such as the Samsung GALAXY Gear VR, the Oculus Rift, and on forthcoming ‘glasses-free’ light field displays that will power future TV and mobile devices.

First aired on network television in 1992, Batman: The Animated Series defined the classic DC Comics character for a generation of fans. The success of the highly influential show led to a multi-decade run of critically acclaimed television series and animated original movies set in the DC Comics animated universe it helped establish.

Using OTOY’s OctaneRender™ and light field technology, Warner Digital Series and OTOY are faithfully recreating the look and feel of the animated series in unprecedented detail, collaborating with Batman: The Animated Series producer Bruce Timm. Timm is guiding the meticulous adaptation of the original 1992 designs into a fully realized universe with volume and depth. OTOY is also developing tools that perfectly preserve the show’s distinct visual drawing style in 3D space, without requiring any post-production work or manual artist intervention. OTOY’s OctaneRender™ scales this process through light field rendering on the cloud, translating the show’s unique aesthetic, immediately recognized by millions of fans, into cinematic virtual reality.

The project represents the first of many commercial endeavors leveraging OTOY’s rendering and holographic streaming technology which aim to deliver next-generation media and entertainment experiences to emerging content platforms in the coming years.

“We are continuously exploring new and exciting ways to tell stories and share experiences with audiences around the globe, and we’re excited to be working with OTOY on this cutting-edge adaptation from Batman: The Animated Series,” said Sam Register, President, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Digital Series. “More to the point: It’s super-cool, eye-popping stuff, and fans are going to love it. We can’t wait for them to have the chance to see the Batcave from the show again — for the very first time.”

“Warner Bros. has always been at the forefront of technology and entertainment, exemplified again today in its partnership with OTOY in bringing this Batman: The Animated Series experience to new audiences through holographic video,” said Jules Urbach, Founder and CEO, OTOY. “We’re thrilled to be part of this project. Our work with Warner Bros. validates the tremendous potential of VR as a new cinematic medium.

Work on the Batman: The Animated Series project is already underway with a first release targeting this winter through the ORBX viewer app.

Relive the Darker Side of Los Angeles with the Harvey Award-Nominated 'Hit: 1955' Trade Paperback

Award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is pleased to announce the December debut of the Hit: 1955 trade paperback. The collection includes all four issues of the Harvey Award-nominated, gritty crime noir story that explores the darker side of the Los Angeles Police Department in the 1950s. Writer Bryce Carlson teams up with Russ Manning Award for Most Promising Newcomer and Harvey Award nominee Vanesa R. Del Rey (The Empty Man) for a story that looks at the twisted history of the LAPD and the policemen who did a little wetwork under the table in the name of cleaning up crime.

“Hit is one of my favorite books we’ve ever published,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “Bryce and Vanesa arrived on the comic book scene lightning-fast last year. It was a groundbreaking debut for two creators that took us to Los Angeles in 1950s and delivered a gem of a noir story. This collection is a must-have for fans of beautiful art, great writing, and comics that add a little something new to the industry. Plain and simple, Hit delivers.”

In Hit: 1955, they say the eyes are the window to the soul. You look at Harvey Slater and you’ll see a homicide detective chasing cigarettes with a few fingers of bourbon. You look into his eyes, and you’ll see a hitman who spends his nights making “untouchable” criminals disappear for the Los Angeles Police Department. But all it takes is a blonde bombshell from his past and a crime syndicate trying to muscle in while Mickey Cohen’s in prison to open Slater’s eyes to who he really is. This book collects the complete four-issue limited series, features the never-before-seen prose short story, “Bonnie,” and includes an introduction by American crime author Duane Swierczynski.

Praise for Hit:

“A violent piece of 1950s noir...comics’ next big ‘Hit’.” - USA Today

“Loved Hit...dark, twisted noir.” - Scott Snyder (Batman, Detective Comics)

“Man, this is good stuff… Suspensful and quirky without being hard to read or impenetrable. Art’s great, too!” - Mark Waid (Irredeemable, The Flash)

“Writer Bryce Carlson has a skill for heightened noir dialogue and creates a strong hook...but the main draw of Hit is Vanesa R. Del Rey’s atmospheric, expressive artwork...“ - The A.V. Club

“The story is compelling, the flawed, gruff human at the center of the action is compelling to read and the plot itself feels fresh and new despite the 60-year-old setting. ... This is a fine bit of noir and it makes me itch for more.” - Comic Book Resources

“...one complicated slice of nasty noir during the golden age of Los Angeles...” - Newsarama

“Thanks to a fresh approach to the detective genre and great art, Hit #1 really packs a wallop. Looks like BOOM! Studios has another hit on their hands. Pun intended.” - IGN

“...Hit gets at the heart of what makes noir so compelling, and plays out the formula in all its glory.” - Multiversity

“The story is compelling and keeps you engrossed, living up to its name many times in the first issue alone.” - Graphic Policy

“Carlson and Del Rey have put together a book that captures a long-past era, but still manages to feel fresh and new, while containing many of the conventions that make stories like this so compelling in the first place.” - The MacGuffin

“Sometimes you just need a meat-and-potatoes detective pulp story to just immerse yourself into, and Hit is perfect for that.” - All-Comic

“It’s clear that a lot of research and love for the crime genre went into this project, and it shows.” - Comic Bastards

The Hit: 1955 trade paperback arrives in comic book shops on December 10th with a cover by series artist Vanesa R. Del Rey for the price of $14.99.
