An American Werewolf in London

One of the greatest horror films of all time is headed to COMET! Check out John Landis’ often imitated but never duplicated 1981 classic, An American Werewolf in London, and discover why it’s always a good idea to “stay off the moors.” The film airs on COMET on August 18 at 8P/7C, and again the following night at the same time.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers

Most of the time, we’re not big fans of remakes. But once in a while, a remake comes along that vastly outshines its inspiration. Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the 1978 reboot of the 1956 sci-fi thriller, is one of those remakes. Not only that, it’s maybe the best remake ever made, and with stars like Donald Sutherland, Jeff Goldblum, and Leonard Nimoy, it’s not hard to see why. The invasion begins on August 25 at 8P/7C, with an encore airing at 8P/7C on August 26.

Blacula & Scream Blacula Scream (DOUBLE FEATURE)

TWO BLACULAS ARE BETTER THAN ONE. Without a doubt the most iconic blaxploitation horror movie ever – and also probably the punniest movie title, period – Blacula has earned legions of devoted followers since first rising from the grave in 1972. Its success spawned an even campier sequel the following year in Scream Blacula Scream,   and now you can catch both Blaculas on COMET in the same day. Blacula stalks your screen first on Saturday, August 5 at 2P/1C, and it will be followed directly by Scream Blacula Scream at 4P/3C.

Blacula airs Saturday, August 5 at 2P/1C

Spider-Man & Punisher Marvel x L.A. Gear Shoes

Marvel and L.A Gear teamed up to release a line of character themed athletic shoes. Oddly, they seem to have been released without much fanfare. In fact, I had never heard of them until I stumbled upon them one day on hottopic.com. I had been searching for Spider-Man items on their site when they popped up. From what I've been able to track down, they've made shoes based on Spider-Man, Captain America, Deadpool, Iron Man, The Punisher, and Black Panther. So far I've purchased the Spider-Man and Punisher shoes with an eye towards the Black Panther pair.

I haven't seen or even thought about L.A. Gear in over twenty years. The shoes were popular in the 80's/early 90's. The brand seemed to have disappeared along with other once popular brands like K-Swiss and British Knights (raise your hand if you remember those!). L.A. Gear was so big that at one point they made Michael Jackson branded shoes.

The Spider-Man version comes in a lightweight low top. The shoes are blue, red and black and feature both a Marvel and spider logo on the tongue. The insoles are made of memory foam and feature a picture of Spidey. They seem to be a pretty well made pair of shoes. I'm not the biggest fan of the look of the shoe, but I'm a huge Spidey fan so I picked them up because Spider-Man.

The Punisher shoes come in a black and grey high top. Again, the insoles are made of memory foam. Like the Spidey shoes, the tongue features Punisher's skull logo. The logo is also featured on the bottom of the shoe and on a tag with the Marvel logo on the side. They aren't as light as the Spidey ones, obviously, but they're a solid pair of shoes. These ones look much better than the Spidey pair. It would have been nice had they been more lightweight, but overall, they're a pretty killer shoe.

BOOM! Studios Announces Tyson Hesse's Diesel: Gear Shift Special

BOOM! Studios is excited to announce the return of Dee Diesel in TYSON HESSE’S DIESEL: GEAR SHIFT SPECIAL, an all-new follow-up to the BOOM! Box imprint’s most successful original graphic novel. The one-shot will debut in comic shops in October.

“I can’t wait to continue telling Dee’s story as she faces a new world of danger and takes on real responsibilities for the first time,” says Hesse. “Gear Shift takes Dee and her crew in a totally new direction that I think fans of the first story will really enjoy!”

Dee’s journey first began on Tyson Hesse’s (Boxer Hockey) personal blog, when Dee and her fellow Peacetowne inhabitants were featured as original character designs. Inspired by “adventure manga like One Piece and stories about burgeoning friendships like How to Train Your Dragon,” Hesse created Dee, a young girl with an airship trying to live up to the legacy of her father, a world-famous pilot. Since then, Dee and her friends have gained a huge cult following and were first published in print via BOOM! Studios as a limited series in 2015 and an original graphic novel in 2016, Tyler Hesse’s Diesel: Ignition, which drew wide acclaim.

“Diesel: Gear Shift picks up right where Diesel: Ignition left off,” explains Hesse. “It’s a chance for fans of the first graphic novel to jump right in to the next story arc right away. Dee and Bull Diesel have reconnected with their lost crew and are on their way back home to regroup and prepare for the long journey ahead.  But when they get back to Peacetowne, they uncover new clues that set them off in search of other Diesel brothers that could have answers to all their questions.”

“Diesel feels both completely fresh and totally timeless,” says BOOM! Studios Editor Shannon Watters. “Dee's story is one that Tyson has held close to his heart for years, and it shows in the care and joy bursting from every page."

Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed BOOM! Box imprint, home to popular original series such as Lumberjanes by Shannon Watters, Grace Ellis, Brooke A. Allen, and Noelle Stevenson; Giant Days by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, and Max Sarin; The Backstagers by James Tynion IV and Rian Sygh; SLAM! by Pamela Ribon and Veronica Fish; and Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams.

Print copies of Tyson Hesse’s Diesel: Gear Shift Special are available for sale in October at local comic book shops (to find a shop near you, visit comicshoplocator.com) or through the BOOM! Studios webstore, and digital copies can be purchased from content providers including comiXology, Kindle, iTunes, Google Play, and the BOOM! Studios app.

Unboxing June's Loot Crate: Alter Ego

June's Loot Crate theme, Alter Ego, tied in perfectly with the recently released Spider-Man: Homecoming film. Looter's were treated to a crate featuring Marvel, Transformers, DC Comics, and more. The box was both a hit and miss affair. While the all of the franchises were awesome, I didn't necessarily go gaga over every item.

First up in the crate was a mini-poster book from DC Comics. The book contained 40 removable posters featuring DC's New 52. These postcard sized pics are perfect for framing.

Next up was an Incredible Hulk-themed bowl for when you're hangry and need to feed the beast. The quality of the bowl isn't exactly the greatest (it's pretty thin), but it'll work for my morning bowl of Frosted Flakes.

This month's t-shirt and pin were definitely on point. The shirt features Optimus Prime transforming from semi to robot. The art was perfect and the color of the tee was also. Designed by Marcelo Matere, this is one of LC's best shirts to date. The pin was equally as cool with Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde. Both fit the theme of the box perfectly.

The digital loot came with two awesome DLC offerings. The first was "limited time exclusive" version of the Green Ranger V2 for Saban's Power Rangers: Legacy Wars mobile game. The second was comics from Valiant and Comixology.

The last and best part of the box was the exclusive Spider-Man Q-Fig variant. Made especially to coincide with the film's release, Looter's get another awesome Q-Fig for their ever-growing collection of exclusive figure's. The black and white Spidey is a "nod to his connection to the Daily Bugle..." It comes housed in a custom box designed to "mimic one of the many front pages of J. Jonah Jameson's newspaper dedicated to the web-slinger." Spidey is my all-time favorite character, making this box worth every penny for me.

Inside June's crate:

-Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde Pin (Loot Crate)
-Optimus Prime G1 T-Shirt (Loot Crate)
-Incredible Hulk Bowl (Vandor)
-DC Comics Poster Book (Insight Editions)
-Valiant Comics DLC (Valiant)
-Green Ranger V2 DLC (Saban)
-Spider-Man Q-Fig Variant (QMx)

Unboxing June's Marvel Collector Corps: Spider-Man: Homecoming

With Spidey swinging into theaters with his first official MCU film, Marvel Collector Corps' theme for June was "Spider-Man: Homecoming." I'm a HUGE Spider-Man fan, so ordering this box was a no-brainer. That being said, my expectations for this one were pretty high. Unfortunately, this box didn't deliver for me. It's not that the quality was lacking, more the fact that what was included in the box was less than amazing (yeah, I went there).

First up in the box were the patch and pin. These were actually pretty awesome. The pin features Spidey's web shooter hologram and the patch of The Vulture was really well done. Both of them found a place on my backpack.

Next up was Peter Parker: Spectacular Spider-Man #1. This issue, like all MCC comics, comes with an alternate POP!-inspired variant cover. This one featured Spider-Man and Vulture.

The T-shirt included was a "Midtown School of Science and Technology" logo tee. While I like the tee as a Spider-Man fan, this one was a bit of a letdown. The neatest part of Funko's boxes is that all of the items are supposed to be exclusives. Unfortunately, you can find the same version of this shirt at stores like Hot Topic. They're not made by Funko, but they are the same.

Finally, we get to the figures. There were two Mystery Mini's and a POP! figure included this month. There were four possible Mystery Mini's (Spider-Man, Homemade Suit Spider-Man, The Vulture, and Shocker). This box contained Spider-Man and Shocker.

The POP! figure was by far the best part of the box. This one was Spider-Man with his web wings. It's not the most exciting figure (I was hoping for a Spidey swinging on a web), but it's a nice variant to have.

Inside this month's MCC:

-Vulture Patch
-Spider-Man Web Shooter Hologram Pin
-Shocker Mystery Mini
-Spider-Man Mystery Mini
-Midtown School T-shirt
-Peter Parker #1 Variant Cover
-Spider-Man with Web Wings Pop! Figure

First Ever ID10T Festival Wrap-up

The ID10T Festival made its big splashy  debut at the Shoreline Amphitheater this past weekend. The two day festival is the brain-child of creator Chris Hardwick, best known as 1/3 of the popular Nerdist Podcast and host of The Talking Dead. ID10T, unlike other summer festivals, brings together the comedy, music, comics, EDM, and television worlds. They all meshed together beautifully in a big, fun celebration of all the things we here at Geek Hash love.

The Festival kicked off with a Mystery Science Theatre 3000 panel moderated by Wil Wheaton. The panels continued throughout the weekend with Con Man, The Magicians, Stan Against Evil, Futurama, Animaniacs Live!, Portlandia, Harmontown, and a live Nerdist Podcast. The television panels, along with the Artists Alley, comic book panels, cosplay, and vendor booths gave the festival a fun comic convention vibe.

The Monster Energy Comedy Tent offered a line-up of comedy superstars. Some of the featured comedians were Demetri Martin, Matt Braunger, Nikki Glaser, and Jonah Ray. Chris Hardwick also surprised with a set during the festival. The Comedy Tent had such a big turnout that next year they'll hopefully be able to expand to accommodate a bigger audience.

Con Man panel

The Mad Decent Dance Tent boasted some big names including Madeon, Troyboi, Party Favor, and more. Once the music started, fans flooded the dance floor and it quickly spilled outside of the tent. Speaking to some of the attendees, quite a few of them were there mainly for the Dance Tent. It was awesome to see them dancing alongside families and Stormtroopers and other cosplayers.

On the Shoreline Main Stage, festival-goers were treated to an amazing line-up of musicians over the weekend. Weezer closed out the first night of the festival to a huge crowd. Also in attendance were Lord Huron, OK Go, and Animal Collective. The biggest discovery of the fest for me has been Tank and the Bangas. The super group, winners of NPR's 2017 Tiny Desk Contest, have been in constant rotation on my playlist since learning of them.

Nerdist Podcast Live
The festival drew thousands over the weekend and was a resounding success. There really is nothing like it in the Bay Area. Speaking to attendees, they were excited to have a festival that was so diverse; they were able to get their pop-culture fix, their music fix, their comedy fix and more all in one place. All of them said that they would gladly attend next year. If the first year was any indication, the organizers should plan on expanding the festival to accommodate more attendees next year. We are definitely looking forward to covering ID10T for years to come!

BOOM! Studios and Cartoon Network Enterprises Announce 'Adventure Time/Regular Show' Crossover Comic Book Series

BOOM! Studios and Cartoon Network Enterprises announce ADVENTURE TIME/REGULAR SHOW, a comic crossover adventure that’s anything but regular. The six-issue limited series launches in August and will bring together the casts of the two hit Cartoon Network series into one story.

When a powerful new villain threatens to conquer Adventure Time’s Land of Ooo, Princess Bubblegum sends Finn and Jake on a desperate quest to find The Power that can save the land—a power that Skips from Regular Show just happens to be hiding! Finn and Jake’s arrival only exacerbates an existing tension between Mordecai and Rigby, and the trip back to Ooo threatens to tear two sets of bros apart… forever.

Written by Conor McCreery (Kill Shakespeare) and illustrated by Mattia Di Meo (Uncle Grandpa), Adventure Time/Regular Show marks the first-ever crossover between the two properties, a fact that’s not lost on the creative team.

“When you get the opportunity to put your little flag into the surface of not one, but two of the greatest story worlds in recent history, you gotta say yes!” exclaims McCreery. “I'm excited, terrified, tickled, and tormented by all the amazing characters and storylines that could go into this crazy thing. Adventure Time and Regular Show are special to me because of the combination of out-of-left-field humor and really deep emotion. I'm going to try to honor those twin engines as best I can with a story that has a LOT of weird stuff, a whack of battles, a few tears, and at least one incidence of Ice King being a patoot."

“Being a super-fan of Adventure Time and Regular Show, this is really like a dream for me,” adds Di Meo. “I know it sounds kinda weird, but it feels just like being in love for the first time—that peculiar mixture of deep enthusiasm, and deafening emotion. Jokes aside, I want to deliver that special magic that those series always had for me. That sense of fun, adventure with that special levity that made all those stories special for me."

Through its award-winning all-ages imprint KaBOOM!, BOOM! Studios began publishing Adventure Time comics in 2012 and Regular Show comics the following year. Both comic series went on to break sales records for all-ages comic publishing. From the mind of series creator Pendleton Ward, the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning Adventure Time follows the unlikely heroes Finn and Jake, best buddies who traverse the mystical Land of Ooo and encounter its colorful inhabitants—and always find themselves in the middle of heart-pounding escapades. Created by J.G. Quintel, Regular Show chronicles the adventures of Mordecai, a blue jay, and Rigby, a raccoon, a couple of best bros in their 20s who work as groundskeepers at a local park—but would rather chill out for a bit.

“It’s almost silly that we haven’t had this crossover yet,” remarks Whitney Leopard, Editor. “Adventure Time and Regular Show are both incredible series with a great cast of characters that work amazingly together. Conor and Mattia bring both worlds together in such a fun and way, you’re not going to want to miss it!”

Adventure Time/Regular Show #1 features a connecting main cover by Phil Murphy (both covers will ship in a 50/50 intermix), a subscription cover by Jorge Corona that pays homage to an Avengers vs. X-Men #1 cover, and a mash-up homage cover by Dustin Nguyen, featuring Mordecai and Rigby emulating the Adventure Time title card.

Print copies of Adventure Time/Regular Show #1 will be available for sale at local comic book shops (use comicshoplocator.com to find the nearest one) or at the BOOM! Webstore in August. Digital copies will be available to purchase on digital book marketplaces, including ComiXology and the BOOM! Studios app.

Adventure Time/Regular Show is the latest release from BOOM! Studios’ critically acclaimed KaBOOM! imprint, publisher of world-class licensed series such as Steven Universe, Over the Garden Wall, Peanuts, and Garfield, along with original series like Brave Chef Brianna by Sam Sykes and Selina Espiritu, and The Deep by Tom Taylor and James Brouwer.
