Nursery Rhymes Turn into Crimes in Paul Jenkins' 'Fiction Squad'

FICTION SQUAD #1 Main Cover by Ramon Bachs

FICTION SQUAD #1 Chase Cover by Michael Dialynas

FICTION SQUAD #1 Retailer Incentive Cover by Humberto Ramos

Who would have guessed that Humpty Dumpty was actually a classic whodunit? Award-winning publisher BOOM! Studios is pleased to announce the October debut of Fiction Squad, a high-stakes detective story set in the mythical land of Fablewood from Paul Jenkins (Fairy Quest) and Ramon Bachs (Marvel’s Civil War: Front Line). The publisher picked up Jenkins’ previous stories set in Fablewood with Fairy Quest: Outlaws and Fairy Quest: Outcasts, and following the successful funding of Jenkins’ Kickstarter campaign for Fiction Squad, the publisher has picked up this series as well. Fans of Fables and Once Upon a Time will enjoy these nursery rhymes gone wrong.

“Fairy Quest was just the beginning now that the wild world of Fablewood continues to expand with Fiction Squad,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon. “There are brand-new characters introduced to this world in a classic mystery story that has a great twist. Fiction Squad exists thanks to thousands of co-publishers who supported Paul’s Kickstarter campaign, and we’re very excited to be a part of it.”

Fablewood is a pretty dangerous place, but no area is more dangerous than the City of Rimes, deep in the heart of the Children’s Realm. After transferring in from the Realm of Mystery, a failed detective from an unfinished prose novel, Frankie Mack, is about to uncover a conspiracy that could unmake storytelling itself. After Humpty Dumpty is pushed to crack and Jack (of Jack and Jill) goes AWOL, Frankie and his partner, Simple Simon, are put on the case.

Fiction Squad #1 arrives in comic shops on October 1st with a cover price of $3.99. The first issue ships with a main cover by series artist Ramon Bachs and two incentive covers, one by Michael Dialynas (The Woods) and the other by Humberto Ramos (Fairy Quest). Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one! It’s also available for order directly from boom-studios.com.

'What If...' Michael Bay Directed Spider-Man?

For those that have been to a flea market, you know that bootleg toys of big franchises like Toy Story, Monster High, and Batman can be found in abundance. For the most part, they are inexpensive, made of cheap plastic, and have horrible paint jobs. The ones I spotted recently while strolling around the Santa Cruz flea market were no exception. The thing that made me ask, "What the...?!?!" was the fact that this 'Ultimate Spider-Man' figure set included Venom, Black Cat, Spider-Man and...wait for it...a red dinosaur (Spider-Saur?) that had Spider-Man stickers adorning it. I can only imagine that in some alternate universe, this is an actual set of toys from a shitty Michael Bay-produced Spider-Man/Transformers crossover film with lots of explosions, Shia doing his best "Amazing Bag-Man" schtick, and Megan Fox giving yet another Oscar-worthy performance as the Black Cat.

FYI- As tempted as I was to pick up the 'Ultimate Spider-Man' set, I saved my $8.00 for some tasty asada fries from the taco cart instead. No regrets.

Japanese Guardians of the Galaxy Commercials

Spending ridiculous amounts of time clicking links to videos on YouTube is good for something. No, really. I discovered these awesome Japanese spots for Guardians of the Galaxy on the WaltDisneyStudiosJP channel. I don't understand a word that is being said, but it seems to capture the fun and tone of the comedic elements of the Guardians film. Why don't we get these types of commercials here? I imagine something would probably get lost in translation. Enjoy!

20th Century Fox Options BOOM! Studios' 'The Foundation'

20th Century Fox has optioned BOOM! comic book miniseries THE FOUNDATION for development as a film. The story follows the adventures of a secret organization, The Foundation, originally created by Nostradamus to prevent his prophecies from occurring. They still exist today, protecting mankind and fighting an array of global threats.

THE FOUNDATION was originally published by BOOM! in December 2007 as a five-issue miniseries, created by Kody Chamberlain, written by John Rozum, and with art by Chee. The trade paperback collection features a cover by Paul Azaceta.

Fox has hired Evan Daughtery, screenwriter of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (which just opened #1 at the box office with a $65 million weekend) to adapt THE FOUNDATION. Daugherty also wrote Divergent and Snow White and the Huntsman.

As you may know, BOOM! signed a first-look feature film deal with 20th Century Fox, opening a satellite office on the Fox lot this past April. The Hollywood Reporter characterized the deal as a pact that "potentially could be one of the most lucrative underlying rights deals ever made with a comic book company." The deal gives Fox first crack at BOOM!'s catalog of comic book series, but if the studio passes, BOOM! can shop the titles to other potential buyers.

The first-look deal covers all four BOOM! imprints: the core BOOM! brand, the All-Ages-focused KaBOOM!, boutique prestige imprint Archaia, and the new experimental brand BOOM! Box.

Fox has indicated it will be looking to the comic book company to supply high concept source material as a platform to develop feature films.

BOOM! Founder and CEO Ross Richie will produce the adaptation of THE FOUNDATION, along with President of Development Stephen Christy.

"THE FOUNDATION has long been one of my favorite projects in BOOM!'s original publishing slate from back in the day," said Richie. "Kody Chamberlain had a brilliant idea and I am excited that a major studio thinks so, too!"

In case you missed it, BOOM! announced a few weeks ago a film deal with Fox for MALIGNANT MAN with James Wan (Fast 6, The Conjuring) producing and directing.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' Writer Dan Abnett Invades BOOM! Studios With New Limited Series 'Wild's End'

WILD'S END #1 Main Cover by I.N.J. Culbard

WILD'S END #1 Retailer Incentive Cover (1 in 10) by David Petersen

Fight back with BOOM! Studios as we take you on a journey of survival with our latest original series debuting in September, WILD’S END. Writer Dan Abnett, whose groundbreaking run on Guardians of the Galaxy was the inspiration for the hit Marvel film adaptation, is teaming up with artist I.N.J Culbard (H.P. Lovecraft’s At the Mountains of Madness) to bring readers a smart take on a classic science-fiction mythos. Abnett takes a decidedly more earthbound vantage point as Clive, Peter, and Gilbert suddenly find their 1930s rural England community invaded by aliens. Fans of Blacksad and MOUSE GUARD will love the anthropomorphic characters of WILD’S END as they struggle to preserve their own lives, which have been upended by the harsh realities of death and violence. Their race to discover the secret behind the invasion is reminiscent of the iconography depicted in H.G Wells’ The War of the Worlds crossed with the buddy comedy humor as found in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto trilogy.

“We are ecstatic to welcome Dan Abnett back to BOOM! with this amazing original series,” said BOOM! Studios Editor-in-Chief Matt Gagnon, referring to the 2012 series by Abnett, THE HYPERNATURALS, that was published by the studio. “Dan is one of comics’ most renowned science-fiction writers, and I can tell you that he and I.N.J are taking us on a ride that’s crazy entertaining and very unexpected with WILD’S END. I think this series is going to find a special place on the reading lists of folks who are looking for something a little different on the comic shelves every month.”

WILD’S END #1 invades comic book shops on September 10th with a main cover by series artist I.N.J. Culbard and a retailer incentive cover by David Petersen (MOUSE GUARD) for the price of 3.99. Not sure where to find your nearest comic retailer? Use comicshoplocator.com or findacomicshop.com to find one! It’s also available for order directly from boom-studios.com.
