Big WOW! ComicFest Wrap-Up

Big WOW! ComicFest returned to the San Jose Convention Center this year in a big bad way.  The Bay Area’s “biggest and best comic-con and costume festival” has been getting bigger every year and this year it grew by leaps and bounds.  There were more artists, more vendors, more panels and more cosplayers than previous years.

Some of the notable guests included artists Charlie Adlard, Frank Cho, and Brian Stelfreeze.  Actor’s attending the event included favorites such as Clare Kramer (Buffy), Steven Skyler (Power Rangers Samurai), and Vernon Wells (Road Warrior).  One of the biggest draws of the con was Kenpachiro Satsuma (Godzilla). With the release of the new Godzilla film this weekend fans were in kaiju heaven.  Along with Satsuma, Satoshi “Bin” Furuya (Ultraman) was also in attendance.

If you’re a fan of cosplay, then this years con was perfect.  Attendees came out in force dressed as their favorite heroes and villains. The costume contest boasted no less than 50 participants.  Their costumes ranged from store-bought to painstakingly recreated homemade pieces.  Characters represented ran the gamut from a Dalek to a ridiculously awesome Robocop. Personal favorites included a Black Panther and an Apocalypse.

Big WOW! went all out this year in assembling some of the best cosplayers around!  The guests were some of the biggest names in cosplay.  Riddle, Ivy Doomkitty, Abby Darkstar, and Anthony Misiano were just a couple of the talented cosplayers in attendance.  The biggest turnout was definitely for featured guest Jessica Nigri.  Lines for pictures with the cosplayer were long and she met and took pictures with each and every fan.

This year, Big WOW! put together some pretty great panels for attendees.  There was “Japan’s Heroes and Monsters” panel with August Ragone, Kenpachiro Satsuma, Bin Furuya, and Daisuke Ban.  Another panel brought together actor’s William Katt (The Greatest American Hero) and Parker Stevenson (Hardy Boys).  On the events side of the con the offerings were pretty awesome.  Batman fans were treated to a Batman Museum with hundreds of items that included a full-size replica of the 1966 TV Batmobile!

There were also tons of independent artists and groups in artists alley which we’ll be highlighting in the coming weeks. Keep an eye out!

Big WOW! keeps getting better every year.  As it draws more crowds and interest, you can be sure that the 2015 Big WOW! ComicFest is going to be one heck of an event.  See ya’ll next year!

Godzilla's Kenpachiro Satsuma Appearing at Big WOW! ComicFest

This weekend Godzilla stomps his way through Big WOW! ComicFest!

Via Big WOW!

Man in the suit legend Kenpachiro Satsuma began his career by by portraying giant monsters like Hedorah and Gigan as they battled Godzilla. In 1984’s RETURN OF GODZILLA, he would land the title role of Godzilla and continue as the King of Monsters for the next 11 years. Being king isn’t easy as Satsuma would often suffer any number of physical ailments due to the intense heat and lack of oxygen in the suit. But it was all worth it as he bravely battled Biollante, King Ghidorah, Mothra, Destoroyah, and many more!

Slack off with Mordecai and Rigby with the 'Regular Show 2014 Annual' on May 21st!

This oversized issue features a collection of action-packed stories from a talented group of indie creators, including Kevin Burkhalter (REGULAR SHOW), Jimmy Giegerich (REGULAR SHOW), Tessa Stone (BRAVEST WARRIORS), Mad Rupert (REGULAR SHOW: SKIPS), and Andy Kluthe (Nerd Rage). For example: Mordecai and Rigby find themselves at odds over a haunted pair of sneakers; Pops might be lost inside a hidden labyrinth and he’s not quite sure how he got there; and Skips might finally have a problem that even he can’t solve. Do you know those appetizer sampler platters you can order in your favorite restaurant? I liken the REGULAR SHOW 2014 ANNUAL #1 to that: It contains a little bit of everything!

As you may or may not know, REGULAR SHOW is based on the hit Cartoon Network series created by J.G. Quintel about super lazy best buds Mordecai the bluejay and Rigby the raccoon, who routinely try to find ways to slack off from their jobs as groundskeepers at the local park. In their hilarious, off-the-wall adventures, they interact with the other characters in the show, including their boss, Benson; Skips the yeti; and Muscle Man, a fellow groundskeeper whose best friend is Hi-Five Ghost.

The on-sale date for REGULAR SHOW 2014 ANNUAL #1 is May 21st. The main cover for the issue is illustrated by regular series artist Allison Strejlau and it retails for $4.99. There are also two retailer incentive covers by Jen Lee and regular series writer KC Green that will be available in limited quantities.
